No. 17 Golden Knights Make it Ten Straight Wins with 89-84 Road Victory at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Gannon men's basketball team will enter the New Year with a ten-game winning streak after claiming a hard-earned 89-84 at Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Knights, ranked 17th in the latest D2CSC Div. II Top 25, are now 10-2 and finished PSAC crossover action undefeated at 6-0. Lock Haven fell to 5-6 and 2-3 in the PSAC.

The Golden Knights found themselves trailing by 12 points at 42-30 before holding the Bald Eagles scoreless over the final four minutes to pull to within 42-41 at the half. They came out and grabbed the lead for good five minutes into the second half and took their largest lead of the game at nine points at 77-68 with 5:44 left to play.

Gannon made just two baskets the rest of the way but enjoyed a strong showing at the free throw line to hold off the Bald Eagles. Lock Haven actually came back to tie the game at 79-79 with just under three minutes to play, but Gannon went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe over the final two minutes.

Still tied at 81-81, Pace Prosser (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) gave Gannon the lead for good with two free throws. After a missed 3-pointer Victor Desmond (Onalaska, Wisc./Onalaska) scored on a layup on a set play following a timeout with 44 seconds remaining. Prosser's lob pass was perfect to Desmond for an 85-81 lead. Justin DeBuck (Broward County, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) and Ernest Shelton (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) added a pair of free throws each down the stretch.

Gannon returns to action on Thursday, January 2 and will play twice in three days. The Golden Knights will host West Virginia State in the makeup of a game originally scheduled for the Gary Miller Classic, then begins PSAC West action on Saturday, January 4 hosting California (Pa.).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Gannon jumped out to an early lead but the Golden Knights found themselves trailing for much of the first half. Lock Haven took its largest lead of the half at 42-30 with 4:08 remaining but the Bald Eagles were held scoreless the rest of the half. Gannon ran off the final 11 points of the half to trail by just a points at 42-41 at intermission.

Lucas Sekasi (Washington, DC/Jackson-Reed) started the comeback with a pair of free throws and Ernest Shelton (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) hit a 3-pointer following a turnover. Justin DeBuck's (Broward County, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) layup pulled Gannon to within 42-37 and Shelton added a rebound basket. Pace Prosser's (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) layup off a steal made it 42-41 with 44 seconds remaining. Mason Kemp (Shawnee, Kan./Mill Valley) and Layne Sarver (New Madison, Ohio/Tri-Village) came off the bench to lead the Golden Knights with eight points in the half.

The Bald Eagles sizzled from the floor over the first 20 minutes, shooting 60.0 percent from the floor (15-of-25), including 7-of-13 on 3-pointers. Gannon came in at 42.1 percent (16-of-38). Gannon eventually started forcing turnovers, and 11 LHU miscues led to a 16-8 advantage in points off turnovers at the half.

The lead changed hands seven times over the first five minutes of the second half. Gannon finally took the lead for good when Layne Sarver (New Madison, Ohio/Tri-Village) hit a 3-pointer to make it 55-53 with 14:50 remaining. Leading 65-62, Gannon outscored the Bald Eagles 10-4 to build the lead to 75-66.

Lock Haven rallied to tie the game at 79-79 and 81-81 before Gannon used a strong showing at the line to pick up the road win.

BY THE NUMBERS

Gannon shot 46.4 percent from the floor (32-of-69) and was 7-of-19 on 3-pointers. Lock Haven cooled off after a hot start but still finished at 54.7 percent (29-of-53) and went 9-of-22 on 3-pointers. Gannon was 18-of-26 at the line while LHU was 17-of-26.

Lock Haven fared better than many teams do against Gannon's full-court press, committing 19. But Gannon had a season-low seven turnovers and when it was said and done the Golden Knights outscored Lock Haven 26-10 on turnovers. LHU held a 26-10 edge on the glass.

Tasman Goodrick (Sydney, Australia/St. Joseph's College) led five players in double figures with 18 points and also had eight rebounds and three steals. Layne Sarver (New Madison, Ohio/Tri-Village) came off the bench to make 4-of-6 3-pointers and total 14 points. Pace Prosser (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) finished with 13 points, six assists and four steals, while Justin DeBuck (Broward County, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) contributed 12 points and five assists. Ernest Shelton (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) went 5-of-6 at the line to total 10 points, adding six rebounds. Victor Desmond (Onalaska, Wisc./Onalaska) led all Golden Knights on the glass with nine boards.   

Isaiah Stewart led three Bald Eagles in double digits with 15 points.
