Golden Knights Wrap Up 2024 Facing Division II's Best in the 45th Midwest Classic

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's wrestling team will compete for the final time in 2024 after finishing with final exams. The Golden Knights travel to Indianapolis, Ind. for the 45th Midwest Classic on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15.

The Midwest Classic is annually one of the top Division II tournaments in the country. This season is no different, with 19 of the 25 teams ranked in The Open Mat's tournament rankings scheduled to compete. A total of 44 teams are currently lined up to wrestle. In addition, many of the top wrestlers in the country will be competing

The field includes seven of the top ten teams in The Open Mat rankings, with Gannon ranked eighth. Leading the way is second-ranked Central Oklahoma, the defending national champion, and third-ranked UW-Parkside. In addition, No. 6 McKendree, No. 7 Adams State, No. 9 Glenville State and No. 10 Indianapolis will compete over the two-day period.

Gannon has annually appeared in the Midwest Classic. A year ago the Golden Knights finished 11th in the 41-team field with four wrestlers earning medals. Gannon's top finish prior to that showing was fifth in 2019.

Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) led the Golden Knights with a fifth-place showing at 133 lbs. Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) placed sixth at 165 lbs., Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) finished seventh at 125, and Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) took eighth at 184 for the Golden Knights.

Echevarria and Coreno return and are two of five nationally-ranked wrestlers in head coach Tom Boyd's lineup. Echevarria comes in ranked second by The Open Mat at 133 lbs. and third by the NWCA. The redshirt junior owns a 7-0 record. Coreno (5-2) is ranked fourth by the NWCA and tenth by The Open Mat at 184 lbs. Casilio is also ranked but is injured and has yet to compete this year.

Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) is Gannon's highest ranked wrestler. A grad transfer and two-time national qualifier at Bucknell, he is ranked first by The Open Mat and fourth by the NWCA. He has a 9-1 record.

Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High) (6-1) is fourth according to the NWCA and seventh by The Open Mat at 157 lbs. Logan Sallot (Erie, PA/McDowell High School) (8-1), a redshirt freshman, is 14th at 125 lbs. in The Open Mat poll.

Following the Midwest Classic the Golden Knights return to action with another difficult test. They will compete in the Glenville State Quad, facing three of the same teams they will see this weekend -- Grand Valley State, Glenville State and Lander – on Sunday, January 5.
