Shelton Bombs Away to Lead No. 7 Gannon to 101-74 Win vs. Winston-Salem State

ETTRICK, Va. – Gannon sprinted out to a 16-0 lead and never trailed for the second straight game while coming away with a 101-74 win over Winston-Salem State. The two teams met on the second day of the PSAC-CIAA Challenge.

After suffering two losses in Florida against strong competition last week the seventh-ranked Golden Knights evened their record at 2-2. Winston-Salem State dropped to 0-2.

The defense continues to look much better after a tough first weekend. Gannon limited the Rams to 36.8 percent shooting and scored 35 points off 22 turnovers.

The offense, meanwhile, once again showcased balance with five players in double figures. The Golden Knights reached 100 points for the first time after topping the century mark 16 times in 2023-24.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Gannon blitzed Winston-Salem State for the first 16 points of the game, all in just over two minutes. Ernest Shelton (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) and Pace Prosser (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) hit back-to-back three's and Justin DeBuck's (Broward County, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) basket made it 8-0. Shelton added his second 3-pointer and then it was DeBuck's turn to hit a three. Shelton concluded the run with a basket and it was 16-0 at the 17:43 mark. Incredibly, WSSU turned the ball over on its first seven possessions.
WSSU closed the deficit to two on two occasions but Gannon answered with another run. Leading 30-28, Gannon went on a 13-2 run to build the lead back up to 43-30, with Tasman Goodrick (Sydney, Australia/St. Joseph's College) contributing seven points. Gannon's lead was 47-38 at the half.

WSSU closed to 47-40 early in the second half, but any comeback hopes by the Rams disappeared as Gannon ran off the next 11 points to make it 58-40. Shelton bombed away for three straight three's before Rocco Morabito (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) scored on a layup. The game never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

BY THE NUMBERS
Gannon shot 50.0 percent from the field (39-of-78), including 56.1 percent (22-of-39) in the second half. The Golden Knights were 15-of-35 from beyond the arc. Winston-Salem State was held to 36.8 percent (21-of-57) and made eight 3-pointers in 18 attempts. The Rams were able to stay in the game while spending plenty of time at the charity stripe. They were 24-of-34 while Gannon went 8-of-14 at the line.

The Golden Knights forced 22 turnovers that led to 35 points while committing just 10 miscues. They also had a slight 38-35 advantage on the glass.
Ernest Shelton (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) led five players in double figures with 19 points. The sophomore guard made 5-of-10 3-pointers and was one of four players to make at least three shots from beyond the arc.

Cal Baptist transfer Tasman Goodrick (Sydney, Australia/St. Joseph's College) had a huge game with 18 points and 16 rebounds in just 24 minutes. The 6-foot-9 sophomore from Australia made 6-of-10 field goals and was 6-of-9 at the line. He pulled down eight offensive boards.

Justin DeBuck (Broward County, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) and Pace Prosser (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) added 17 points apiece. Prosser, a freshman, was 4-of-8 on 3-pointers and led Gannon with seven assists. DeBuck made 3-of-5 three's. Layne Sarver (New Madison, Ohio/Tri-Village), like DeBuck a transfer from Union (Tenn.), made 3-of-7 trifectas to finish with 15 points, adding six rebounds. Freshman Lucas Sekasi (Washington, DC/Jackson-Reed) ended the night with six points and five assists.

Micah Jones led Winston-Salem State with 18 points while Jeremy Dixon was also in double digits with 16 points.
