Gannon to Face Biola in Third Place Match at WWPA Championships after Falling to Concordia

IRVINE, Calif. – The Gannon men's water polo team will play for third place in the WWPA Championships on Sunday afternoon after a 14-9 loss to Concordia (Calif.) on Saturday. Gannon came into the tournament as the number two seed from the East while the Golden Eagles won the West.

Gannon turned in a valiant effort against host Concordia, with the matches taking place at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center. The Golden Eagles finished with 41 shots compared to 29 for the Golden Knights, and Concordia was 5-of-13 on the power play and Gannon just 1-of-8.

The Golden Knights fell behind 5-3 after one quarter. Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) knotted the score at 2-2 with one of his two goals, but Concordia went on to score the next three goals.

A big second quarter did in the Golden Knights as Concordia grabbed a 10-5 lead at the half. The Golden Knights closed the gap by a goal to 12-8 after three periods but the Golden Knights were held to just one goal in the final period. That was courtesy of Nikiforos Liantziris (Athens, Greece), closing the gap to 12-9 at the time. Liantziris' third goal of the match came at 6:05 but the Golden Knights were held scoreless the rest of the way.

Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) turned in a strong effort in goal. The senior finished with 13 saves.

Gannon will face Biola, the number two seed from the West, in the third-place match on Sunday. A year ago the Golden Knights were fifth in their first season in the WWPA.
