Gannon Finishes Fourth at WWPA Championships

Golden Knights drop a narrow 14-12 decision to Biola in third-place match

IRVINE, Calif. – The Gannon men's water polo team finished in fourth place at this weekend's WWPA Championships following a narrow 14-12 loss to Biola in Sunday's third-place match at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center. The Golden Knights end the year with a 16-7 record in Zarko Sadikovic's second year as head coach. Gannon finished in fifth place a year ago in its first season in the WWPA.

Gannon jumped out to a 4-2 lead after one quarter on goals by Victor Volant (Fuveau, France), Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh), Petar Markovic (Belgrade, Serbia), and Dillon Shaw (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline). Shaw's goal came with three seconds left in the quarter.

The Golden Knights went through an extended drought however as Biola tied the match at 4-4 at the half and went ahead 7-4 before Kotskar scored at the 3:05 mark to make it 7-5. Gannon went almost 13 minutes without scoring.

The rest of the match was basically one team scoring, followed by the other. Biola never went up by more than three goals but Gannon could pull within a goal just once at 7-6 late in the third quarter. That came on a Markovic goal, assisted by Volant.

Kotskar paced the Golden Knights with five goals, while Markovic had four goals and three assists.
