After Extended Layoff Golden Knights Run Winning Streak to Five Games with 17-12 Win over McKendree

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's water polo team opened action in the WWPA Erie Classic on Friday night with a 17-12 win over McKendree. The Golden Knights extended their winning streak to five games in a row and have won seven of their last eight matches. The match was also the start of WWPA action and was Gannon's first game since September 22.

Liantziri, Markovic and Volant all scored four goals to pace Gannon. Volant contributed four goals and three assists while Liantziri added a pair of assists. Alvaro Marco (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) was once again solid in goal with nine saves while playing all 32 minutes. The victory raised Gannon to 10-3 while McKendree fell to 0-13.

The Golden Knights never trailed in the match, breaking a 1-1 tie with six straight goals for a 7-1 lead after one period. Victor Volant (Fuveau, France) scored three of his four goals in the opening eight minutes. They maintained a 10-5 lead at the half but the Bearcats closed to within 12-9 after three periods and remained behind by three goals with just over five minutes to play at 15-12.

Marco held McKendree scoreless the rest of the way  and Gannon pulled away thanks to goals by Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) and Nikiforos Liantziris (Athens, Greece), the latter on a penalty shot.

Gannon will play twice on Saturday with six total matches set to take place at Cathedral Prep's Hallman Aquatics Center. The Golden Knights play Mercyhurst at 12 noon then return to the pool to celebrate Senior Night at 5:00 p.m. against Penn State Behrend.
