Fadale and tough defense help Gannon women's soccer team shut out Edinboro

GU junior midfielder Ella Fadale scored in her return to the lineup and Gannon held Boro without a shot

EDINBORO, Pa. – Ella Fadale (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) scored a first-half goal in her return to the lineup and Grace Emanuel (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added a second-half goal as the No. 10 Gannon women's soccer team downed Edinboro 2-0 to remain unbeaten on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Gannon defense dominated as the Golden Knights held the Fighting Scots without a shot in the game as GU racked up 24 shots, including 14 on goal.

Coach Colin Petersen's first-place Gannon team moved to 6-0-3 in the PSAC West with 21 points in the standings and now own a four-point lead over second-place IUP and Slippery Rock. The Knights are 8-0-3 overall.

Edinboro dropped to 4-4-3 and 4-4-1.

Just a few minutes after entering the lineup for the first time in more than a month, Fadale took a pass from Aubrey Pyne (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) on the left side of the box, cut to her right, and ripped a shot past the Edinboro goalie into the left side of the net. That gave Gannon a 1-0 lead at the 27:17 mark. Pyne earned the assist on the play,

Fadale, a junior, is a two-time All-PSAC West midfielder, but she has been particularly good against Edinboro. In 2023, she had a pair of two-goal games against the Fighting Scots. On Sept. 11, she scored a goal in GU's 5-0 victory over Edinboro at McConnell Family Stadium. Fadale played on Sept. 14 against Pitt-Johnstown but had not appeared in game since because of an injury.

In the second half on Wednesday, Emanuel gave Gannon an insurance goal at the 78:49 mark when she scored into the lower left side of the goal off an assist from June Monasterio (Bilbao, Spain/Claret Askartza).

Gannon continued to lock down defensively in the second half while dominating possession. The Knights also finished with 12 corner kicks to Edinboro's none.

In 11 games this season, Gannon has outscored its opponents 26-4 and has outshot them 240-46. The Knights have 113 shots on goal while the opposition has combined for 28.

What's ahead:

Gannon will have the weekend off and will prepare to visit Daemen on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
