Gannon women tie Elmira at NWCA National Duals but drop tiebreaker

Golden Knights go 0-2 on opening day of presitigous tournament in Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – A lost tiebreaker cost the Gannon women's wrestling team a chance at a higher finish on Friday in the NWCA National Duals.

In its second dual of the day at the UNI-Dome on Friday, Gannon got five individual victories and tied Elmira 24-24, only to lose the dual on criteria. That dropped Gannon to 0-2 on the day after the Golden Knights lost their opening match to powerhouse McKendree 40-6.

Coach Erin Vandiver's Golden Knights will wrestle in the 13-15 round-robin of the 15-team tournament on Saturday. Gannon will face New Jersey City at 9 a.m. and will close the tourney against Aurora at noon. The Knights can finish anywhere from 13th to 15th in the event, which features most of the premier women's wrestling programs in the nation, including No. 1 Iowa and No. 2 North Central College.

Schyler Caringi (Earlton, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) was a standout again for Gannon after picking up GU's only win against McKendree, a 1-minute, 27-second pin of Caroline Gilstrap in the 170-pound match.
Caringi, a sophomore, was one of five GU wrestlers to win against Elmira.

Chloe Kitagawa (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) opened the dual with a 25-second pin against Elmira's Taylor Goguen in the 101-pound bout. Freshman Kealonie Vega (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola) followed with a 10-0 technical fall over Ana Martins-Garcia at 109 pounds.

Sophomore Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) (123) added a 39-second pin, and freshman Camryn Brown (Woodbridge, CT./Amity) (136) had a fall in 2:04 as Gannon took a 19-9 lead through six matches.

However, Elmira rallied with falls in three of the final four matches, a run that was interrupted only by Caringi's 38-second pin against Elmira's Hazel Dahlquist.

A pin by Tayana Labady at 191 pounds moved Elmira into a tie and gave the Eagles the dual win on criteria.
