ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's wrestling team is one of eight programs that will compete in the Pa. State Tournament on Sunday at East Stroudsburg.
Â
Host East Stroudsburg and Gannon are slated to be joined in the field by Alvernia, Cedar Crest, Delaware Valley, Lock Haven, Ursinus, and York.
Â
Coach
Erin Vandiver's Golden Knights are fresh off a solid performance in the American Open on Jan. 20 at the Erie Sports Center. Among the top performers for Gannon at that tournament were freshmen
Kealonie Vega (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola)Â and
Camryn Brown (Woodbridge, CT./Amity) and sophomores
Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch),
Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School), and
Schyler Caringi (Earlton, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens).
Â
"The team has a lot of positive momentum coming off the American Open and minicamp with international athletes. I know we are all excited to see the team keep it rolling this weekend," Vandiver said. "Kealonie and Cam are having a strong presence on the college scene as freshmen. Jayden and Lili continue to work and improve. Schyler and Juliana (Cubias) are coming off a solid training phase and getting their feel back on mat. Kat (Pendergrass) and Ariana (Gonzalez) are exploring some fun techniques and freestyle holds.
Â
"All in all, the Gannon squad is looking more and more comfortable on the mat, and everyone is ready to dig a little deeper for the final phase of the season."
Â
Here's the lineup that Gannon plans to enter in this weekend's tournament, listed by weight class:
Â
109: Kealonie Vega (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola)Â
116: Kat Pendergrass (Bracey, Va./South Granville (N.C.)),
Juliana Cubias (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel)
123: Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch)
136: Camryn Brown (Woodbridge, CT./Amity)
143: Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School)
155: Ariana Gonzalez (Cypress, Calif./John F. Kennedy)
170: Schyler Caringi (Earlton, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens)
Â
"We are looking forward to competing again this weekend. For the team to be on the competition mat, with a variety of opponents, getting different looks; this part of the season is highly anticipated and very beneficial in preparation for postseason play," Vandiver said. "Plus, this is a very cool event for the state – I don't see a lot of other states doing it, with eight universities this year. We already know that number will increase for next year with the addition of several schools adding women's wrestling as a varsity sport. We appreciate ESU putting on this extraordinary event."
