ERIE, Pa. – A couple of freshmen and three sophomores turned in winning performances on Saturday as the Gannon women's wrestling program hosted the inaugural American Open at the Erie Sports Center.

The tournament featured wrestlers from a variety of countries and states and utilized international weight divisions using kilograms.

Freshman Kealonie Vega (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola) had perhaps the finest performance as she went 4-0 at the 46-52kg weight class to claim first place.

Vega won once by fall and won three times for superiority (10-point technical fall). She finished her division's round robin with the top record.

 

Another Gannon freshman, Camryn Brown (Woodbridge, CT./Amity), also took first in her division by finishing the round robin 4-1. She lost her opening match before running off four consecutive wins, three of them by fall.

Gannon sophomore Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) started impressively in the 59-62kg division, winning 10-0 and 10-4 in her first two matches. She was trailing 5-2 in her third match when she suffered a severe black eye, which required injury time. After the timeout, Ujfalvi, with a head wrap, got a takedown and a pin to move to 3-0. She forfeited her next two matches to finish third in the division. One of her forfeits came to teammate Camryn Brown (Woodbridge, CT./Amity).

Sophomore Schyler Caringi (Earlton, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) went 2-1 after moving up to the 72-76kg division for the tournament. She recorded wins by pin, forfeit, and a 10-8 decision before losing in the decisive match as she placed second with a 3-1 record.

Sophomore Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) also closed the tournament with a winning record in the tough 53-55kg division. After losing her quarterfinal match, Bazemore rallied to win consecutive matches by fall in the consolation first round and the fifth-place match.

Juliana Cubias (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) placed seventh in that division.
