No. 20/14 Gannon Comes Out on Fire to Hand Edinboro 117-96 Defeat

EDINBORO, Pa. – Gannon came out on fire on Wednesday evening and never looked back while handing Edinboro a 117-96 defeat at McComb Fieldhouse. The victory boosted a Gannon team that is ranked 14th in the latest D2CSC Media Poll and 20th in the NABC Top 25 to 12-2 overall and 6-2 in the PSAC West. Edinboro dropped to 3-11 and 2-6, respectively.

Twelve different players scored with four players reaching double figures as the Golden Knights never trailed and eclipsed 100 points for the tenth time. Gannon came in leading Division II in scoring at 110.6 ppg.

After falling behind early in recent games the Golden Knights jumped on the Fighting Scots from the outset. Nigel Haughton (Bel Air, Md./South Kent) opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and Zachary Hobbs (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesa) followed with back-to0-back three's. That made it 9-0 just 72 seconds into the game.

Gannon would go on to make its first five shots, and the first miss was on a dunk. First-year head coach Jordan Fee's squad led 18-11 when they took a double-digit lead for good courtesy of a 13-2 run. The second five got the burst going, with Mike Montano (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison), Nathan Schneider (Kersey, Pa./St. Marys Area) and Derrick Anderson (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) scoring on layups. A pair of Edinboro free throws interrupted the run, but Lyle Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Philadelphia Montgomery Christian Academy) made one-of-two free throws, followed by another Hobbs 3-pointer. When Tipton scored on a traditional 3-point play Gannon led 31-13 with 10:53 remaining.

The Golden Knights went on to lead by as many as 28 points in the first half before entering halftime with a 64-38 lead. Gannon shot a sizzling 73.3 percent from the floor in the opening twenty minutes, making 22-of-30 field goal attempts. That included a 6-for-9 showing on 3-pointers. At the same time the defense limited Edinboro to 30.8 percent (12-of-39).

The lead grew to as many as 32 points in the second half the last at 91-59 with 12:30 remaining. All that remained was when the Golden Knights would top the 100-point mark. This time it came with 7:13 remaining when Tipton sank both ends of a one-and-one to make the score 101-78.

Gannon ended the night shooting a season-high 62.7 percent from the floor (42-of-67), the ninth time at 50 percent or better this season. That included a 9-of-18 chart from beyond the arc, plus making 24-of-29 free throws. Gannon once again ruled the bench points outscoring the Fighting Scots 47-21.
Edinboro finished at 43.8 percent from the floor (22-of-73), making 11-of-33 3-pointers, and 21-of-28 at the charity stripe.

Lyle Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Philadelphia Montgomery Christian Academy) matched his season-high with 21 points to lead the Golden Knights. The transfer from Geneva, who is now over 1,900 points for his career, made 8-of-12 field goals and was 4-of-5 at the line. Hobbs enjoyed a near-perfect shooting night, making 5-of-7 field goals (4-of-5 on three's) and 5-of-5 from the line to finish with 19 points.

Derrick James (Columbus, Ohio/Canal Winchester) added 14 points (4-of-5 FGs, 5-of-6 FTs), adding four assists. Derrick Anderson (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) came off the bench to score 11 points along with four assists. Montano and Schneider added nine points apiece, with Montano pacing Gannon with eight rebounds.

Bernie Blunt led all scorers with 33 points, making 6-of-10 3-pointers and going 11-for-11 at the line.

Gannon returns "home" for its next game on Saturday, January 13 at the Hagerty Family Events Center. PSAC West preseason favorite Indiana (Pa.) will provide the opposition. The Crimson Hawks are 9-4 and 6-1 in the Western Division after defeating Mercyhurst on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
