Gannon rallies to tie game in second half before falling to Charleston on Saturday

Golden Knights knot the game at 1-1 early in the 2nd half before Golden Eagles score three unanswered goals

ERIE, Pa. – After trailing by one goal at the half, the Gannon women's soccer team tied it early in the second half only to see Charleston pull away for a 4-1 win in the final game of a four-game weekend at McConnell Family Stadium.
The Golden Knights, who tied Concord 2-2 on Thursday,  dropped to 0-1-1 as it prepares to open the PSAC season on Wednesday. Earlier on Saturday, Kutztown edged Concord 2-1 on Gannon's field.

How it Happened
  • Laura Vierhout slotted it to Juliette Lucas who buried the ball in the left corner of the net to take a quick 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles went on to carry that lead into the break.
  • The Golden Eagles held a 6-4 advantage in first half shots.
  • After an aggressive offensive push from the Golden Knights, an equalizing goal from sophomore Ella Fadale (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) off an assist from freshman Brooklyn Respecki (McKean, Pa./General McLane) saw the Golden Knights tie the score less than four minutes into the second half.
  • The Golden Eagles used a three-goal surge to leave McConnell Family Stadium with the  first win of the 2023 season.
  • Gannon competed a player down for much of the game and could not fully recover against the talented team from the MEC.
The Numbers
  • Fadale scored the lone goal for the Golden Knights after finishing the contest with two shots (two on goal)
  • Respecki tallied an assist and notched three shots (two on goal).
  • Senior Morgan Sinan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) made four saves in between the pipes for the Golden Knights, while graduate student Jordan August (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown) grabbed two.
  • Juliette Lucas led Charleston with two goals and also racked up three shots (three on goal).
  • Golden Eagle goalkeeper Jordan Maynard notched fives on the night.
  • Possession was pretty even as both teams each were held to 50% on the night.
Up Next
The Golden Knights are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 6, when they hit the road to take on Edinboro at Sox Harrison Stadium. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. start.
