Pool's Early Goal Leads No. 9 Gannon to 1-0 Win at Saint Rose

Alarcon records first shutout of the season

ALBANY, N.Y. – The ninth-ranked Gannon men's soccer team matched its best start since 2019 with a 1-0 win at Saint Rose on Monday afternoon. The two teams were meeting for the first time in a battle of the Golden Knights. The victory boosted the Gannon Golden Knights to a 6-0-0 record while the Saint Rose Golden Knights, an NCAA Division II Tournament team last year, dropped to 1-3-2.

As has been the case for much of the season, Gannon grabbed an early lead. James Pool (Hastings, England/Claverham) dribbled through three defenders and fired a shot past Saint Rose goalkeeper Leopold Defaut for a 1-0 lead late in the fifth minute of play. It was the redshirt senior's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Samuel Alarcon (Madrid, Spain/Colegio el Valle II) and a stout Gannon defense made that goal stand up for the team's first shutout of the season and Alarcon's fifth of his career. The sophomore recorded one save as both teams finished with eight shots. Gannon had just two shots on goal and Saint Rose one. Both teams had three corner kicks.

Gannon concludes its four-game road trip with another staunch test on Friday, September 22. The Golden Knights head west to face former GLIAC foe Saginaw Valley State in a 12 noon match. The Cardinals finished at 14-0-5 a year ago. Despite not suffering a loss, SVSU was eliminated in the Super Region 3 quarterfinals by Lake Erie. The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie but The Storm prevailed on penalty kicks 3-2.

The Golden Knights will be in search of a seventh straight victory. Gannon has not opened the season with seven straight wins since 2007. The 1993 team got off to the best start in school history with 14 straight wins.
