No. 7 Golden Knights Complete Arduous Stretch of Road Games with 1-1 Tie at Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) scored in the 61st minute as the No. 7 Gannon men's soccer team came away with a 1-1 tie at Saginaw Valley State on Friday afternoon. The Golden Knights remain undefeated at 6-0-1 while the Cardinals are now 3-2-2.

Gannon and Saginaw Valley State were previously rivals in the GLIAC but were meeting for the first time since 2007. A year ago SVSU was 14-0-5 and reached the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Super Region 3. The match was a battle of preseason favorites in the PSAC West and the GLIAC.

SVSU All-American Jonathan Mooney got the Cardinals on the board first with a goal at 6:45 of the match. It was his fifth of the season.

The score remained that way until the 60:08 mark when Katsande scored his second goal of the season, assisted by Pau Ferrer (Valencia, Spain/ISES Isabel de Villena). The native of England took a crossing pass from Ferrer in the box and headed the ball into the lower left corner. Ferrer now has a team-high five assists.

The score would remain that way, but goalkeeper Samuel Alarcon (Madrid, Spain/Colegio el Valle II) was up to the challenge in the final ten minutes when the Cardinals fired three shots at him in a span of just under two minutes. Alarcon finished with four saves as SVSU held a 17-9 edge in shots, although shots on goal were just 5-4. Gannon had 11 corner kicks to four for the Cardinals.

After concluding an arduous four-game road trip that covered close to 3,000 miles round trip, the Golden Knights now return home for the first of two showdowns with crosstown rival Mercyhurst. The Lakers are currently ranked 17th in Division II. The two square off on Wednesday, September 27 at 6:00 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium.  Gannon and Mercyhurst were chosen as co-favorites in the Western Division.
