Ninth-Ranked Golden Knights Move to 5-0-0 with 4-1 Win at Daemen

AMHERST, N.Y. – Playing for the first time in 2023 as a ranked team and for the second straight game on the road, the No. 9 Gannon men's soccer team handed Daemen a 4-1 defeat in the home opener for the Wildcats at Karrer Field. The victory boosted the Golden Knights to 5-0-0, the best start since the 2019 edition opened the season with six straight wins. Daemen dropped to 1-2-1.

Gannon made its initial appearance in the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 on Tuesday and justified the lofty ranking. The Golden Knights broke through on the scoreboard just 7:07 into the match when James Pool (Hastings, England/Claverham) found the back of the net in the low left corner for his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Pau Ferrer (Valencia, Spain/ISES Isabel de Villena) assisted on the goal to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead.

After a fast start Daemen forced the action for a period of time before Gannon struck for a pair of goals within just over two minutes of each other late in the half. The first came at 37:11 as Shota Toyama's (Kanagawa, Japan/Tama) shot to the high right side of the goal beat Daemen goalkeeper Arturo Bustamante for his first goal of the season. Ferrer once again recorded the assist as Gannon led 2-0.

At 39:38 Rafa Hyde made it 3-0 with a shot to the low right side, assisted by Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs), for his second goal. The score remained that way at the half with Gannon holding a 9-5 advantage in shots.

Daemen got on the scoreboard in the 55th minute but 15 minutes later Gannon's lead was once again three goals as Benjamin Querling (Zuelpich, Germany/Emil-Fischer Gymnasium) scored at the 69:48 mark, with Orten recording his second assist. It was Querling's second goal of the season.

Gannon held an 18-12 advantage in shots and had ten corner kicks compared to three for Daemen. Samuel Alarcon (Madrid, Spain/Colegio el Valle II), who was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday, played the first 80 minutes in goal and had four saves. Mateo Lite (Huesca, Spain/IES Luis Bunuel) played the final ten minutes and registered a pair of saves.

Gannon returns to action on Monday, September 18 with another trip to the Empire State. The Golden Knights head to Albany, N.Y. to play at Saint Rose in a battle of the Golden Knights. The match gets underway at 1:00 p.m. at the Plumeri Sports Complex. A year ago Saint Rose finished at 9-5-4 and made the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time.
