ERIE, Pa. – Two defensive standouts – soccer player
Leah Bermudez (Milton, Ontario/Jean Vanier Catholic) and football player
Chris Farnsworth (Bristol, Pa./Milton Hershey) – have been named the Gannon University Chick-fil-A Student-Athletes of the Week for the week ending June 9, 2023.
Each week during the offseason, Gannon Athletics will select two student-athletes – one male and one female – who were standouts during the 2022-23 year and are active during the summer. Student-athletes who claimed the award during the academic year are not eligible.
Bermudez, a 5-foot-4 senior, was Gannon's premier defender in 2022. Despite playing in the middle of Gannon's back line, she tied for third on the team with four goals and was third with three game-winning goals. She was especially effective with headers on Gannon corner kicks. She also ranked fifth on the team with eight points while helping the Golden Knights win the PSAC West regular-season title.
Leah was named to the All-PSAC West First Team, the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region Team, and the D2CCA All-Atlantic Region Second Team. She also made the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
Off the field, Bermudez graduated Cum Laude in May with a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a minor in Sports Management and Marketing. She will begin graduate school with one season of eligibility remaining in the fall.
Bermudez completed an internship with Gannon Athletics in the spring while working with the Administration, Facilities, and Media Relations departments. She is playing soccer this summer for the Erie Commodores.
Farnsworth, a 5-foot-11, 189-pound redshirt senior safety, was Gannon's leading tackler last season with 91 tackles (53 solo, 38 assists). He also led Gannon with four interceptions. His efforts helped Gannon tie for the PSAC West title during the 2022 regular season.
Chris was named to the All-PSAC West First Team and the D2CCA All-Super Region 1 Second Team. He was twice named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week. He was recently interviewed by the Draft Diamonds website as a potential pro prospect.
Farnsworth, a Finance major, is working, attending summer school, and working out in preparation for the 2023 season.
