Visha, Engel Provide Gannon with Strong Pitching in Saturday Doubleheader at Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon received a pair of outstanding pitching efforts from starting pitchers Jake Visha (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity) and Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) but unfortunately it did not translate into wins on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Knights lost a pair one-run decisions at Mercyhurst, dropping the opener 1-0 and the nightcap 3-2 in eight innings. Gannon is now 10-16 and 5-7 in the PSAC West while Mercyhurst improved to 17-6 and 11-1 in league play.

Visha threw the first complete game of his career in the opener but was done in by a run in the second inning while losing 1-0. Engel went five innings for the second time this season, as the freshman departed with a 2-1 lead.

Gannon will now look to snap a four-game losing streak on Tuesday, April 11 hosting D'Youville in a doubleheader. The action gets underway at McConnell Family Stadium at 12 noon. Later in the week the Golden Knights return to PSAC West play with a four-game set against Slippery Rock on Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15.

Game 1 – Mercyhurst 1, Gannon 0
Gannon received another outstanding pitching effort but the Golden Knight bats were silenced by Aiden Kelly. The right-hander held Gannon to just three hits and the Golden Knights did not get a runner to second base until the top of the sixth. Cam Vozel was stranded at second in the sixth and the Golden Knights threatened again in the seventh. With two outs Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) rolled a single through the left side. Pinch-hitter Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) followed with a single up the middle. Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) grounded into a force out to end the game. The freshman had Gannon's only other hit, a leadoff single in the third. Jake Visha (Cleveland, Ohio/Trinity) was the hard-luck loser as the left-hander fell to 1-2 despite giving up just five hits. Mercyhurst scored the lone run off the game in the second inning. The leadoff batter reached on a single and eventually scored on a two-out single by Matt Christopher. Visha walked three and struck out six.

Game 2 – Mercyhurst 3, Gannon 2 (8 innings)
Gannon received an outstanding pitching effort from freshman Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) but Mercyhurst tied the game with a home run in the sixth inning and then pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. The freshman right-hander threw his best game of the season, going five innings and allowing just two hits and an unearned run. He walked one and struck out. The Golden Knights took their first lead of the series when Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) hit his fifth home run of the season over the fence in left center field in the third inning. They manufactured a run in the fourth for a 2-0 lead when Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) reached on an infield single, moved to second on a ground out, stole third and scored on a wild pitch. The Lakers got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning and the tied the game when Luke Jackson homered with two outs in the sixth. Gannon left runners on second and third in both the seventh and eighth innings but the frames ended on strikeouts. Mercyhurst's first two batters walked to start the eighth, and following a sacrifice Gannon loaded the bases with an intentional walk. Landon DiBeradin ended the game with a bases-loaded walk. Gannon outhit Mercyhurst 9-4, with Hess and Chris Mullins (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) each going 3-for-4.
