Golden Knights Fall Victim to the Big Inning vs. Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. – Three big innings proved to be the difference in Friday's Gannon-Mercyhurst doubleheader. Unfortunately for the Golden Knights, it was the Lakers who enjoyed the big innings. Mercyhurst would go on to win both games at McConnell Family Stadium by scores of 11-0 and 5-3 in the first of back-to-back twinbills. The two local rivals will play two games again on Saturday on the Mercyhurst campus.

Gannon is now 10-14 overall and 5-5 in the PSAC West while Mercyhurst improved to 15-6 and 9-1, respectively.

Game 1 – Mercyhurst 11, Gannon 0
The final score was very deceiving, although at the end of the day Mercyhurst finished with 13 hits compared to five for Gannon. Junior Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) was engaged in a pitcher's duel with Mercyhurst ace Jarrett Heilman for the first five innings as the two matched zeroes. Schott, a left-hander, allowed just two baserunners to reach second base over the first five innings. But the wheels fell off in the sixth as Mercyhurst scored five times on five hits. The Lakers then added six more runs in the top of the seventh thanks to three hits, three walks and a hit by pitch. Schott finished with a very deceiving pitching line while going for the first six innings. He fell to 1-1 while allowing 10 hits and a pair of walks while striking out seven. Gannon threatened in the bottom of the first when Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) walked and eventually stole second and third, but Heilman would shut them down after that. Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) and Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) each went 2-for-3 to account for four of Gannon's five hits.

Game 2 – Mercyhurst 5, Gannon 3
Mercyhurst's third big inning came in the top of the third. The Lakers grabbed a quick 1-0 lead when Matt Christopher hit the first pitch of the game for a home run off Dylan Crowley (Eden, N.Y./Hamburg). The redshirt sophomore left-hander settled in after that and had two quick outs in the third when Mercyhurst struck for four runs. The first two came thanks to a walk and two-run homer. Another walk preceded an error that kept the inning going as the Lakers scored two more runs on a double. Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) relieved to start the fourth inning and was brilliant over the final four innings. The sophomore right-hander allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out seven. While Boyer held the Lakers at bay the Gannon offense started to show some life. They pushed one run across in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) got Gannon's first hit of the game with a single up the middle with one out, and a Chris Mullins' (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) single and Branden Myers' (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) walk loaded the bases. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) followed with a walk to drive in Gannon's first run of the day. In the sixth, Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) opened the inning with a single and Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) was hit by a pitch. Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) loaded the bases for the second straight inning with a single to center. Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) hit a drive down the left field line that Luke Jackson made a diving catch of. Hess would score on the sacrifice fly, but the diving catch saved two runs. Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) reached on a single with one out in the seventh and scored with two outs on Ian Hess' (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) double down the left field line. That was as close as Gannon would get as the game ended on a strikeout. Hess had a pair of hits in four at bats as each team finished with six hits.
