Golden Knights Lose Twice to No. 22/18 Seton Hill Despite Strong Outing by Versaw-Barnes

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon got a first-hand look at the Seton Hill pitching staff on Thursday afternoon. The Griffins came in ranked 18th by the NCBWA and 22nd by Collegiate Baseball with a perfect record in PSAC West action. They had eight shutouts coming in and added two more to their total as Gannon lost by scores of 1-0 and 8-0.

With the PSAC regular season winding down the Golden Knights are now 11-11 in the division and 17-21 overall. Seton Hill improved to 36-8 with its 12th straight win and is now 22-0 in league play.

The two teams will meet for the second of back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday at Seton Hill. Gannon dropped into fourth place in the Western Division on Thursday as Indiana (Pa.) swept a doubleheader from Mercyhurst to move ahead of the Golden Knights at 12-10. Gannon and IUP meet for four games next week to close out the regular season. Gannon holds a three-game lead over California (Pa.) (8-12) for the final playoff spot.

GAME 1 – Seton Hill 1, Gannon 0
Kieran Versaw-Barnes (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) and Seton Hill's Jon McCullough matched zeroes in one of the best pitching duals of the season. Versaw-Barnes, a transfer from George Mason, had only thrown 10 innings all year while building up his arm. The redshirt sophomore right-hander was brilliant while throwing a season-high six innings. He allowed just three hits and a pair of walks while striking out eight. After pitching around jams in the first and second innings, Versaw-Barnes retired the final 10 batters he faced. Unfortunately McCullough was just as good. He came in with a 2.04 ERA and while the Golden Knights threatened several times they could never break through with the big hit. With two outs Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) singled and Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) doubled but McCullough struck out the next batter to end the inning. The fourth ended with Gannon stranding runners on first and third. In the fifth the inning ended with a Golden Knight on second. The teams entered the seventh inning in a scoreless tie, with Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) relieved Versaw-Barnes. The Griffins would push across an unearned run on a pair of hits for a 1-0 lead. The Golden Knights mounted a challenge in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Blake Barker. With one out Branden Myers (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) doubled to left center, and he moved to third on a groundout. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) hit a shot down the first base line for a groundout to end the game. Hess reached base three times in the game on a pair of singles and a walk. Gannon finished with seven hits compared to five for Seton Hill.

GAME 2 – Seton Hill 8, Gannon 0
Gannon's other transfer from George Mason, Dylan Crowley (Eden, N.Y./Hamburg), threw game two and threw a pair of scoreless innings before the Griffins scored four runs in a sloppy fourth inning, two unearned. The lefthander settled in to throw two more scoreless innings before exiting in the fifth inning allowing two earned runs. Seton Hill would score more runs in the sixth inning against the Gannon bullpen. Seton Hill ended with a 12-2 advantage in hits, with Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) going 2-for-2 to account for Gannon's lone hits against Brandon Bergert.
