Girman Hits Tenth Home Run as Gannon Falls Twice to California (Pa.)

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon softball team played the second of four straight doubleheaders on Monday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium. After several postponements the Golden Knights finally played California (Pa.) for the first time this season. The results did not go in favor of the Golden Knights, as Cal claimed the first game by an 8-3 margin and then came back for a 7-3 win in the nightcap.

Gannon and Cal entered the day tied for fourth place in the PSAC West but the two losses dropped the Golden Knights into fifth place at 14-12 while Cal is now 16-10. Gannon, now 15-23 overall, holds a one-game lead over Indiana (Pa.) for the fifth and final spot in the PSAC Tournament.

The Golden Knights play two games at Slippery Rock on Tuesday before playing a second doubleheader in three days against the Vulcans on Wednesday, this time at Cal.

The good news for the Golden Knights was the continued hot hitting of Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette). The sophomore accounted for Gannon's three runs with her tenth home run of the season. That is tied for seventh all-time in records kept since 2000.

GAME 1 – California (Pa.) 8, Gannon 3
The Golden Knights were done in by five errors and six walks as Cal held just an 8-6 advantage in hits. Cal opened the scoring with a run in the second, but Gannon answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) opened the inning with a single, and with one out Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) singled to center, with Girman scoring on a throwing error. Lea Coffman's (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) sacrifice fly plated Fox. Cal bunched together five hits and took advantage of a pair of errors to score five times in the top of the third. Ca; would build the lead to 8-2 before Gannon scored a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Angela Vicini (Perry, Ohio/Perry). Andrea Watson (Venus, Pa./Cranberry Area) reached all four times she was up with a walk and three hits, including a triple.

GAME 2 – California (Pa.) 7, Gannon 3
Freshman Josie Spano (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) held the Vulcans at bay for three innings and Gannon took a 3-0 lead when Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) blasted a three-run homer to center field. The sophomore's tenth home run of the year came with two outs. Unfortunately Gannon had three of its six hits in the inning and Cal responded with three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Watson was 2-for-4 to end the doubleheader at 5-for-7.
