Lenda Tosses Two-Hitter as Gannon Splits Twinbill at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Sophomore Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) pitched Gannon to a 4-2 win over Slippery Rock in the opening game of Tuesday's doubleheader as the Golden Knights picked up an important win with the PSAC West campaign winding down. Gannon rallied from a five-run deficit in game number two before Slippery Rock held on for an 8-7 win.

Tuesday's doubleheader was the third in three days for Gannon, and the Golden Knights will play for the fourth straight day on Wednesday. They play at California (Pa.), facing the Vulcans for the second time in three days. After that the Golden Knights are scheduled to host Mercyhurst on Saturday, April 29 to wrap up the regular season.

Gannon is now 16-24 overall following the split with Slippery Rock, but 15-13 in the PSAC West. With Cal catching fire of late and now at 17-11 after a split with Seton Hill on Tuesday, Gannon and Indiana (Pa.) are tied for the fifth and final PSAC Tournament berth at 15-13. IUP still has doubleheaders remaining with Pitt-Johnstown and Seton Hill. Gannon does hold the upper hand in the event of a tie with wins in three of the four meetings with IUP this year.

GAME 1 – Gannon 4, Slippery Rock 2
Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) threw a two-hitter and freshman catcher Jordan Best (Shippenville, Pa./Clarion Area) drove in two runs to lead the Golden Knights. Lenda, a sophomore right-hander, allowed singles in the third and fourth inning but did have to pitch around some trouble while walking five batters. She finished with three strikeouts. Gannon jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the second and two more in the third. Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) tripled to center field with one out in the top of the third inning, and with two outs Best singled to right to plate the first run of the game. Gannon would leave the bases loaded. An inning later Gannon again left the bases loaded but pushed across two runs. Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) led off the inning with a single and stole second. Josie Spano (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) walked, while Ryan came around to score on a wild pitch. A Mallozzi single and a hit by pitch to Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) loaded the bases, and Lea Coffman's (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) fielder's choice gave Gannon a 3-0 lead. SRU cut the lead to 3-2 with single runs in the third and fourth innings. The Golden Knights scored an insurance run in the fifth inning. Fox led off the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a Best double to left field. It was the first extra base hit of her career. After one-two-three innings for Lenda in the fifth and sixth innings, the seventh inning started in ominous fashion with a leadoff walk. The runner eventually moved to third but Lenda retired the next three batters to close out her eighth win. Gannon finished with seven hits. Mallozzi and Best were both 2-for-3.

GAME 2 – Slippery Rock 8, Gannon 7
Gannon nearly rallied from a 6-1 deficit but Slippery Rock pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to salvage a split. SRU led 6-1 after three innings, with Gannon's run courtesy of an RBI single by Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) in the second inning. Gannon scored a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Lea Coffman (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), and closed to 6-4 with two runs in the fifth on three hits. Jules Ryan's (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) groundout plated one run and Josie Spano (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) drove in the second with an RBI single up the middle. SRU bumped the lead to 7-4 with a run in the bottom of the inning, but Gannon answered with a three-run sixth on four hits to tie the game at 7-7. Coffman and Jordan Best (Shippenville, Pa./Clarion Area) opened the inning with back-to-back hits. With one out Andrea Watson's (Venus, Pa./Cranberry Area) double to left center scored Coffman. Ryan followed with a double to score Best and Watson and tie the game. Slippery Rock pushed across the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth on a single. Mallozzi opened the seventh with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. She remained on second following two strikeouts before Best walked to make it first and second. The game ended on a strikeout. Gannon finished with 11 hits, with Mallozzi and Watson going 2-for-4. Ryan drove in three runs. Every starter had at least one hit.
