Gannon Splits with Seton Hill Thanks to Girman's Walk-Off Double

ERIE, Pa. – Trailing 3-0 in game number two against Seton Hill after a 14-4 loss in the opener, the Gannon softball team possibly saw its PSAC playoff hopes slipping away. That's before Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) stepped to the plate and drilled a game-tying three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth and Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) hit the game-winning double over the head of the center fielder with two outs in the seventh.

The end result was a 5-4 win in game number two against the PSAC West-leading Griffins (25-13, 18-6 PSAC West) and a split of Sunday's doubleheader at McConnell Family Stadium. The victory breathed life into Gannon's hopes for a 13th-consecutive PSAC Tournament berth as the Golden Knights played the first of four doubleheaders in four days.

The Golden Knights are now 15-21 overall but 14-10 in the PSAC West and tied with California (Pa.) for fourth place in the division. The two meet for the first time this season on Monday at McConnell Family Stadium in the first of two doubleheaders in three days. In between Gannon plays at Slippery Rock (15-9) on Tuesday. The regular season concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader against Mercyhurst. The Lakers sit second in the division at 17-9. The top five teams in each division qualify for the upcoming PSAC Tournament. Indiana (Pa.) is nipping on the heels of Gannon and Cal at 13-13.

Monday's doubleheader against California (Pa.) will get underway at 2:30 p.m.

Game 1 – Seton Hill 14, Gannon 4 (6 innings)
The Griffins pounded out 15 hits, including three home runs, as pitching ace Lauren Dellett improved to 16-4. Gannon took a 2-0 lead after one inning as Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) hit her ninth home of the season after Josie Spano (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) had singled with two out. The ninth homer ties her for ninth in a season (since 2000). Seton Hill took the lead with a run in the second and four in the third. The Golden Knights answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to make it 5-4. Girman again accounted for the runs with a two-run single with two outs. That's as close as Gannon would get, however, as the Griffins scored the final nine runs with five in the fourth and four more in the sixth to end the game. Girman accounted for three of Gannon's eight hits as the sophomore outfielder went 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs. Andrea Watson (Venus, Pa./Cranberry Area) added two hits in three at bats.

Game 2 – Gannon 5, Seton Hill 4
Seton Hill looked for a quick knockout of the Golden Knights with two runs in the first and another in the third. But freshman Josie Spano (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) settled in and held the Griffins to just one more run the rest of the way. Gannon got on the board in the fourth inning with two outs as Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) drove in Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) with a single to make it 3-1. Mallozzi had reached with a double to right center. Seton Hill answered in the top of the fifth thanks to a home run by Camryn Murphy for a 4-1 lead.
Natalia Mallozzi vs. Seton Hill
Natalia Mallozzi hits game-tying three-run homer.
The Golden Knights broke through against starter Chloe Elliott in the bottom of the sixth with four straight hits. Spano opened the inning with a double to right center and moved to third on a single by Girman. Mallozzi followed with her second home run of the season over the fence in center field, with the three-run bomb tying the score at 4-4. Gabi Vasi's (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) double knocked Elliott from the game, with Lauren Dellett entering. She retired the next three batters as the sixth ended in a 4-4 tie. Seton Hill opened the seventh with an infield single and the runner advanced to second on a wild pitch but Spano was able to pitcher her way out of the jam. The base runner moved to third on a fly out, but the Knights threw out the potential winning run at home on a ground ball to second baseman Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford). Mallozzi then ended the inning with a diving catch down the right field foul line. In the bottom of the seventh Ryan reached first on an infield single with one out. Spano hit into a fielders choice, bringing Girman to the plate. She stayed alive during the at bat, fouling off several pitches from Dellett before driving a pitch over the center fielder's head. Spano sprinted around third and slid into home with the winning run with two outs. The freshman scored two of Gannon's runs and also improved to a deceiving 2-6 on the year. She scattered nine hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out one. Girman ended the doubleheader at 5-for-6 with 5 RBIs after going 2-for-3 in the nightcap. Mallozzi was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, while Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) was also 2-for-3.
