Gagnon Hits for the Cycle in Game Two as Gannon Sweeps Clarion

Kerestes drives in winning run in opener, Engle throws three-hit shutout in nightcap

ERIE, Pa. – The heroes were many for the Gannon baseball team on Friday afternoon as the Golden Knights swept a doubleheader from Clarion at McConnell Family Stadium. Gannon scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for an 8-7 win after entering the frame trailing 7-4. In the nightcap Gannon received a shutout pitching effort from freshman Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) hit for the cycle in a 10-0 win.

The Golden Knights improved to 17-19 with the two wins and thanks to winning three of four the last two days against the Golden Eagles they are now 11-9 in PSAC West action. That is good for third place in the division with a pair of doubleheaders remaining against both Seton Hill and Indiana (Pa.).

Gagnon enjoyed an incredible afternoon, driving in seven runs in the two games while going 5-for-8 in the twinbill. While going 4-for-4 in the nightcap, the redshirt junior reached on a bunt single in the second inning, hit a solo home run in the third, tripled in the fifth to drive in a run, and capped the cycle with a two-run double in the sixth.

Gannon will face division-leading Seton Hill in a pair of doubleheaders next weekend. The two teams meet in Erie on Friday, April 28 before playing a pair in Greensburg, Pa. the next day.

GAME 1 – Gannon 8, Clarion 7
Gannon found itself playing from behind much of the game and found itself trailing 7-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Making matters worse was they were facing Griffin Snyder, who shut them down to pick up the save in Clarion's win on Thursday. The winning rally began with Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) hitting his second double of the game. After a groundout, Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) walked. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) loaded the bases on a single up the middle. Gagnon drove in the first run on a fielder's choice, and the bases remained loaded thanks to an error. Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) tied the game at 7-7 with a single up the middle. Gagnon scored the winning run when pinch-hitter Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) drilled a pitch down the right field line. Clarion jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but Gannon cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the frame thanks to Miguel Vega's (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) RBI double. Clarion took a 4-1 lead with two more runs in the fifth, only to see Gannon score three times in the bottom of the inning. One run scored on a bases loaded walk to Vega and tied the game with a two-run single. Clarion scored twice in the sixth and once more in the seventh. Gannon ended with 11 hits, with Hess going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) was 2-for-4. Gagnon drove in three runs and Zeroski a pair. Kyle Borrello (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) struck out the only two batters he faced in the seventh to pick up the win.

GAME 2 – Gannon 10, Clarion 0
After pounding out 11 hits in the opener, Gannon had 11 more in the nightcap to complement an impressive pitching display by freshman Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep). The right hander improved to 3-0 with his second straight complete game and first career shutout. He allowed just three hits and walked just one batter, that the leadoff hitter in the seventh. It was his only three-ball count of the game. Engel struck out five. Over his last three games he has allowed just one earned run in 19 innings. It was Gannon's first shutout of the season. Gagnon, meanwhile, was starring at the plate. He was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and four runs batted in while hitting for the cycle. He added a pair of stolen bases. Branden Myers (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) drove in three runs while going 2-for-3, while Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) hit a two-run homer in the third inning, his fourth of the season. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) reached base three times and scored twice. He was hit by a pitch twice and walked. Myers drove in the first two runs with a double in the second inning. Vega and Gagnon hit home runs in the third for a 5-0 lead, and the Golden Knights scored three more runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.
