Manning Magnificent in Goal as Golden Knights Come Up Just Short at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team came up just short of posting one of its biggest upsets in years on Wednesday afternoon before host Slippery Rock rallied for an 8-7 win. The loss eliminated the Golden Knights from the PSAC playoff picture with a 3-12 overall record and 3-7 in the PSAC West. SRU moved a step closer to clinching the third and final berth in the PSAC West and is now 9-5 and 5-4 in conference play.

Slippery Rock had dominated the Golden Knights in the first meeting of the year, winning 13-3, but this time around the Golden Knights matched Slippery Rock goal-for-goal in a low-scoring match and entered the final period with a 6-5 lead. Gannon matched its biggest lead of the game when Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) gave the Golden Knights a 7-5 lead with 13:54 remaining on a free position goal. It was Stevens' second of the match and team-leading 31st of the year.

Slippery Rock held the Golden Knights without a goal the rest of the way. The Rock pulled within a goal just over two minutes later and knotted the match at the 6:47 mark on an Olivia Fox free position goal. With 5:26 left Lauren Searles gave SRU an 8-7 lead.

The Rock won the ensuing draw control and used up close to three minutes of the clock before Haleigh Manning (Milton, Ga./Cambridge) came up with her career-high 17th save in a one-on-one situation to give the ball back to the Golden Knights.

Over the final two minutes Gannon had three shots at tying the match, but SRU goalie Gillian O'Rourke came up with a pair of saves and one shot was wide. Stevens forced a turnover in the SRU end in the final minute, The Rock quickly forced a turnover and ran out the clock.

Gannon held a 2-1 lead after one period and led 5-4 at the half. Charlie Hunter's (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg) free position goal midway through the third period boosted the lead to two goals.
Manning was big all afternoon as Slippery Rock held a 36-24 advantage in shots. Gannon made good on 13-of-23 clear attempts while SRU was at 18-23.

Six different Golden Knights scored goals with Stevens the lone player with multiple goals, scoring twice.

The Slippery Rock match was the final road contest for Gannon this season. The Golden Knights wrap up the season against a pair of local rivals, hosting Mercyhurst on Wednesday, April 25 and Edinboro on Saturday, April 28.
