EDINBORO Pa. – The Gannon University softball team busted out the bats on Tuesday as the Golden Knights piled up 20 runs on 24 hits on the way to a doubleheader sweep at Edinboro.
Coach
Michelle Wiley's Gannon squad piled up 14 hits in an 8-3 victory in Game 1 before adding 10 more hits in a 12-3, five-inning win in Game 2 at Edinboro Softball Field.
The second game of the doubleheader was a wild one as the Golden Knights belted three home runs and four doubles, and even had a steal of home plate.
Gannon (10-16 overall) improved to 9-5 in the PSAC West while moving into fourth place in the division. Edinboro dropped to 9-19 and 3-13.
Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) stood out offensively in the doubleheader for Gannon. The freshman shortstop went 6-for-7 with two doubles, three runs scored, one home run and seven RBIs. She raised her season average from .282 to .333 in the two games.
Game 1:
Gannon 8, Edinboro 3: Fox went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to spark Gannon's Game 1 victory.
She was far from the only Gannon player who was swinging a hot bat though. Leadoff hitter
Andrea Watson (Venus, Pa./Cranberry Area), No. 2 hitter
Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford), and No. 3 hitter
Josie Spano (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) each had two hits and an RBI. Ryan scored two runs, while
Jordan Best (Shippenville, Pa./Clarion Area) also added two hits.
Gannon led 4-3 in the fourth inning when Fox ripped a three-run double down the left-field line to expand the lead to 7-3. Coffman then drove home Fox with a groundball.
Sophomore
Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) (5-4) earned the victory with her fifth consecutive complete game. She was 4-1 over that span. On Tuesday, Lenda limited Edinboro to one earned run while scattering seven hits. She struck out six and did not walk a batter.
Game 2:
Gannon 12, Edinboro 3: Gannon scored eight runs in the fifth inning to blow open a close game.
Fox went 3-for-3 with a double, home run, two runs, and four RBIs. Ryan and
Maddie Krause (North Royalton, Ohio/Holy Name High) also homered in the game.
Ryan had a big game, going 2-for-3, including a solo homer to open the scoring in the top of the first inning. She also stole home to start the scoring in the eight-run fifth inning.
Ryan, Spano, Fox, and
Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) each scored twice in the game.
Krause's homer was her second of her career, and both have come in wins over Edinboro in Game 2 of a doubleheader. Her walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning on March 21 against Edinboro gave Gannon a 4-3 victory at McConnell Family Stadium.
On Tuesday, Krause's three-run homer pushed Gannon past the eight-run mercy rule for a five-inning game.
Lenda started Game 2 and went two innings. Spano (1-5) then picked up her first win by pitching three innings of relief while allowing only one run on five hits.
What's ahead:
Gannon will travel to Greensburg on Wednesday for doubleheader at Seton Hill with Game 1 beginning at 2:30 p.m.Â
