Mallozzi Has Big Day at the Plate in Doubleheader at Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – After several postponements Gannon and Seton Hill were finally able to meet on the softball diamond. Gannon led in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader against the division-leading Griffins, but Seton Hill rallied back in both contests to win 3-2 in the opener and 9-6 in the nightcap.

As the PSAC is starting the second half of divisional play, Gannon is now 10-18 overall and 9-7 in the PSAC West. Seton Hill improved to 20-12 and 13-5, respectively.

Wednesday's twinbill was part of a stretch of six doubleheaders in eight days. The Golden Knights swept two games at Edinboro yesterday and return to action on Friday, April 14 hosting Indiana (Pa.). The next day they host Pitt-Johnstown, and following a day off, Gannon plays host to California (Pa.) on Monday, April 17 and Clarion on Tuesday, April 18.

Game 1 – Seton Hill 3, Gannon 2
The Golden Knights jumped out to 2-0 lead just three batters into the game as freshman Josie Spano (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) hit her third home run after Andrea Watson (Venus, Pa./Cranberry Area) led off the game with a single. Seton Hill scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the game. The Griffins gained the lead on a home run by Grace Paredes with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. The loss spoiled an impressive outing by Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois). The sophomore fell to 5-5 while allowing five hits and three walks while striking out a pair. The Gannon bats had no answer for Lauren Dellett, who struck out 15 while allowing just four hits. After allowing Spano's home run, Dellett retired the next ten batters and allowed just two singles the rest of the way. Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) had a pair of singles.

Game 2 – Seton Hill 9, Gannon 6
Gannon took a 4-0 lead after scoring three runs in the top of the second and another in the third. Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) opened the scoring with an RBI single, and Andrea Watson (Venus, Pa./Cranberry Area) added another with a base hit. The third scored on an error. Ashley Fox' (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) double to left field in the fourth drove in the fourth run. A two-run Homer for Seton Hill cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third. The Griffins exploded for five more runs in the fourth to take the lead for good at 7-4. Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) and Lea Coffman (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) hit RBI doubles in the fifth as Gannon closed to 7-6. The Griffins added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the inning, and brought ace Lauren Dellert in to close out the game. Mallozzi led Gannon's 12-hit attack with three hits in four at bats, including all doubles. Coffman was 2-for-3 as every batter in the lineup had at least one hit.
