CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – A freshman led the way for the Gannon University women's wrestling team on the second and final day for the NCWWC Championships.
Three veterans also savored their moment as All-Americans at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse.
Meanwhile, Gannon placed 10th in the national team race.
Freshman 143-pounder
Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) placed fifth in her weight division to lead Gannon's eight national qualifiers and four All-Americans from the two-day tournament. After going 2-1 on Friday to earn All-America status, the native of Hungary went 2-1 again on Saturday to reach the podium in the fifth spot.
On Saturday, Ujfalvi opened with a 39-second fall against Clarissa Agostini of Adrian before losing by technical fall to the eventual third-place finisher, North Central's London Houston, in the consolation semifinals. Ujfalvi then turned in another pin in the fifth-place match, beating Kendall Bostelman of North Central in 4:02.
Ujfalvi was dominant in her four wins over the two days, recording a technical fall and three pins. She closed with a record of 28-12 as she led Gannon in victories this season.
KNIGHT TO KNIGHT
Gannon experienced an oddity in the 170-pound division on Saturday. Teammates
Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and
Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) wrestled each other in the medal round. In their final match of the season, they dueled for seventh place and Gonzalez emerged with a 2-1 victory.
It was the third time this season the training partners have faced each other in a match. Gonzalez, a junior, finished with 2-1 record against Helm, a senior.
On Jan. 29, they wrestled each other in the title match of the PA State Tournament as Gonzalez emerged with a 6-1 victory.
Helm got payback in the Northeast Regional as she defeated Gonzalez 2-1. Helm eventually won the 170-pound weight class in the regional while Gonzalez placed third as both wrestlers qualified for Nationals.
Helm capped her career by finishing her senior season with 20-12 record and an eighth-place honor at Nationals. Gonzalez, a junior, will return to Gannon next season after closing with a 22-10 record in 2022-23.
TRANSFER PROSPERS
Brielle Larsen (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) had previously wrestled at King University and had qualified for the 2021 Nationals. However, she transferred to Gannon for the 2022-23 season, and now she's an All-American.
Larsen went 2-1 on Friday, including a stunning 13-10 comeback win over the No. 7-ranked wrestler in the country in her division.
With her spot as an All-American already secured, Larsen went 0-2 on Saturday to place eighth in the 116-pound weight class.
Coach
Breonnah Neal's team compiled 39 points in the two-day event to place 10th among 37 teams.
