Bullpen Excels as Golden Knights Conclude Spring Trip with Loss to Ashland

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Gannon baseball team wrapped up a stretch of nine games in eight days in Florida with a  5-2 loss to Ashland on Saturday morning. The Golden Knights head north with a 5-7 record while Ashland improved to 4-1.

The game got off to a rough start for Gannon as starter Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington), who was earlier in the week named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week, allowing four runs in the top of the first. Three came across on a three-run homer by Ben Peltz.

The right hander was lifted after the first inning and the bullpen proceeded to allow just one unearned run over the final eight innings. Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) allowed an unearned run in the fifth inning while going 3.2 innings, allowing a pair of hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Evan Harrison (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Aloysius Gonzaga S.S.) went the next 2.1 innings, giving up a hit and striking out two. Kieran Versaw-Barnes (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) and Connor DeMoss (Uniontown, Pa./Uniontown Area) threw the eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Versaw-Barnes struck out two.

Unfortunately, the Gannon bats struggled after scoring 23 runs in a pair of wins on Friday. The Golden Knights were limited to six hits. Dylan Gamber (Mayfield Village, Ohio/Mayfield) drove in Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) with a single in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 4-1.

The Golden Knights added their second run in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch hitter Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) double, and pinch runner Seth Sanders (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Midview) scored on a single by pinch hitter Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) with two out.

Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) was the lone Golden Knight with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base.

Weather permitting, the Golden Knights will take the field again on Tuesday, March 14 hosting Mansfield in a nine-inning game.
