Four Gannon women's wrestlers secure All-America honors at NCWWC Nationals

Larsen, Ujfalvi, Helm, and Gonzalez ensured to finish anywhere from 3rd to 8th at NCWWC Nationals

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Gannon University women's will return home with four All-Americans.

On Saturday, they will find out which place each of the four will earn.

Brielle Larsen (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) (116 pounds), Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) (143), Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) (170), and Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) (170) secured All-America status on Friday by advancing through the consolation fourth round at Alliant Energy PowerHouse. Each lost in the quarterfinals but then bounced back to win and earn All-America recognition.

Larsen, Ujfalvi, Helm, and Gonzalez each could finish anywhere from third to eighth place in their respective weight divisions on Saturday.

Gannon's Chloe Kitagawa (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) (101 pounds), Lana Perez (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) (136), and Stephanie Floor (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Leone) (155) each had one win before being eliminated with two losses on Friday. Juliana Cubias (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) bowed out after two losses.

Head coach Breonnah Neal's Gannon squad is in 10th place among 37 teams in the standings.

Gannon's biggest success came in the 170-pound bracket, where Helm and Gonzalez both collected All-America honors. The GU duo could face each other again in Saturday's medal round because they are on opposite sides of the bracket. Both are making their first appearance at Nationals.

Helm, a senior who won the Northeast Regional, opened the NCWWC Nationals with a 10-0 technical fall over Melena Jones of Colorado Mesa. After a 6-2 loss to No. 3 Brooklyn Hays of Augsburg, Helm claimed a 3-1 victory over Chardon's Kamila Montenegro to earn the All-America nod. Helm improved her season record to 20-10.

Helm will face Alexandra Castillo of McKendree in the consolation semifinals.

Gonzalez, a junior, had a dramatic victory to clinch All-America status. After trailing for much of the match, she rallied past Emmanuel's Alyssa Arana 8-4 n the fourth round of consolations. That boosted her season record to 21-9. Earlier, Gonzalez defeated Simpson's Jenna Joseph 3-1 before losing to No. 2-ranked Cheyenne Bowman of King by a 10-0 technical fall.

Gonzalez will meet Cara Broadus of Sacred Heart on Saturday in the consolation semifinals.

At 143 pounds, Gannon's Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) earned All-America honors as a freshman. She also leads the Golden Knights with 26 wins this season. The native of Hungary was dominant in her two wins Friday. She defeated Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Anna Strand by a 10-0 technical fall before suffering a close 9-6 loss to Lock Haven's No. 2-ranked Grace Stem in the quarterfinals. Ujfalvi then bounced back with a quick fall against Adrian's Taylor Cutler in 20 seconds.

In Saturday's consolation semifinals, Ujfalvi will meet Clarissa Agostini of Adrian.

Gannon's Larsen had wrestled at Nationals before but not with Gannon. The transfer student qualified in in 2020-21 when she was wrestling for King University.

Larsen, a junior, opened with a high-scoring 13-10 decision over No. 7 Ivy Threatful of Simon Fraser. In that match, Larsen stormed back for the win after trailing 10-4.
