Snow and High Winds Hamper Gannon vs, Slippery Rock Match

ERIE, Pa. – We've all heard the jokes about how bad the weatherman's predictions are. On Wednesday after the Gannon and Slippery Rock women's lacrosse could only wish that local meteorologists were wrong. They weren't!

The winds picked up before the 4:00 p.m. match, rain started falling early in the contest and not long after that the rain turned to snow. By halftime the teams were faced with blizzard conditions. Snow started covering the McConnell Family Stadium artificial surface and soon the lines were covered. With conditions deteriorating and Slippery Rock holding a 13-3 lead, the officials called the match after three periods.

Neither team scored during the first half of the initial period as turnovers dominated play. Slippery Rock broke the ice with a goal at the 7:07 mark and The Rock led 4-0 after one period.

Slippery Rock made it 5-0 with a goal less than a minute into the second period before Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden) got Gannon on the board with her 10th goal of the season at 10:10. McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) added team-leading 18th goal of the season and 98th of her career at 5:23, with Avrey Kirisits (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) picking up the assist. SRU would lead 9-2 at the half.
Hannah Mowery (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) opened the scoring in the third period with a goal at 13:12 to close the gap to 9-3, but The Rock scored the final four goals of the match.

SRU held a 27-9 advantage in shots and came up with 13 draw controls compared to six for Gannon. The Golden Knights finished with 20 turnovers compared to 16 for Slippery Rock.

Gannon returns to action on Saturday, April 1 playing at Edinboro.
