Gannon Rally Comes Up Short in 14-12 Loss to D'Youville

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team is beginning to show a familiar trend. Fall behind early and then come roaring back. That was the case once again on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Knights came up just short against D'Youville, falling 14-12. The match was the final non-conference game of the season and leaves the Golden Knights at 1-7, while D'Youville improved to 5-5.

Sunday's match was played at Mercyhurst University's Saxon Stadium with McConnell Family Stadium unavailable after high winds damaged fencing around the stadium on Saturday.

D'Youviolle jumped out to a 5-1 lead less than ten minutes into the match and led 7-3 after one period. Gannon actually pulled to within 5-3 following back-to-back goals by Skylar Parsons and Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool). The Saints ended the period with a pair of goals, including one with just 11 seconds remaining.

A low-scoring second period saw Gannon score the first goal, courtesy of a free position goal by Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden), but D'Youville answered with two goals to enter halftime with a 9-4 advantage.

Gannon outscored the Saints 5-3 in the third period to pull to within 12-9 with 15 minutes remaining. Stevens scored a pair of goals in the final three minutes to close the deficit to three goals.

Grace Cunningham (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) opened the fourth period with a goal 50 seconds into the period as Gannon pulled to within two goals. The Saints scored just over two minutes later to make it 13-10, but Jacobs found the net twice, once at 8:16 and the second at 5:36, as Gannon was within a goal at 13-12.

For the next five minutes neither team scored. Gannon misfired on a potential tying shot with two minutes remaining,  and not long after turned the ball over. The Saints pushed their lead to 14-12 with a goal with 32 seconds left to play.

Gannon held a 32-26 advantage in shots, with the Golden Knights committing 16 turnovers and D'Youville 12. The Golden Knights had 20 draw controls and D'Youville 10.

Jacobs and Stevens paced Gannon with four goals apiece. Cunningham finished with two goals and an assist.

Gannon returns to action with a PSAC West contest on Wednesday, March 29, hosting Slippery Rock at 4:00 p.m.
