Hepditch, Woodworth Score Four Goals but Daemen Scores in Final Seconds to Defeat Gannon 14-13

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Gannon women's lacrosse suffered a heartbreaking 14-13 loss at Daemen on Sunday afternoon as Camryn Day scored a free-position goal with 2.1 seconds remaining. The loss drops the Golden Knights to 0-4 while Daemen improved to 2-3.

On a cold day with snow surrounding the field at the Medaille Sports Complex at Buffalo Color Park, the two teams staged a close battle all day, with seven ties. Daemen held a 3-2 lead after one quarter but Gannon outscored the Wildcats 5-2 in the second quarter for a 7-5 halftime advantage. McKenna Woodworth's (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) third goal of the match gave the Golden Knights an 8-5 lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter, matching either team's largest lead of the day.

Daemen rallied with for straight goals to take a 9-8 lead before Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) and Avrey Kirisits (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) scored late in the period, sending the two teams to the fourth quarter tied at 10-10.

The Wildcats would go up by two goals at 13-11 when Diana Bacher tallied her fifth goal of the match with 1 minute, 30 seconds remaining. Hepditch scored her fourth goal of the day on a free position goal at 1:08 to pull Gannon within a goal, and Gannon gained the ensuing draw control. Freshman Charlie Hunter (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg) followed with her second goal of the season on another free position goal for the seventh tie of the day with just 39 seconds to play.

Daemen would win the draw control and with 4.3 seconds left Gannon was whistled for a foul. Day lined up for the free position shot from the left win and took one step and fired a shot to the low left corner past freshman Riley Finnegan (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) for the game-winning goal with 2.1 seconds to play. It was her lone goal of the game.

Daemen ended with a 32-27 advantage in shots. Gannon was successful on 15-of-20 clears while Daemen had similar success at 15-of-19. Gannon committed 20 turnovers and Daemen 18.

Gannon finished with a season-high 13 goals with Woodworth and Hepditch each contributing four goals and an assist. Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) and Kirisits had a goal and an assist, with Grace Cunningham (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas), Skylar Parsons and hunter each finding the back of the net once. Finnegan finished with nine saves between the pipes.

Gannon will makes it home debut while opening PSAC West action at McConnell Family Stadium on Wednesday, March 15 hosting Indiana (Pa.). The action will get under way at 4:00 p.m.
