Golden Knights Drop PSAC, Home Opener to IUP Despite Spirited Comeback

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team opened up play in the PSAC West along with playing in the friendly confines of McConnell Family Stadium for the first time on Wednesday afternoon. Playing on a sun-bathed but cold day the Golden Knights dropped a 16-9 decision to Indiana (Pa.). Gannon is now 0-5 overall while IUP, picked to finish second in the PSAC West preseason poll, is 2-3.

The Golden Knights fell behind by an 8-1 margin midway through the second period but then the offense came alive to put a scare into the Crimson Hawks. Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden) scored the first goal less than a minute into the match, but the Crimson Hawks proceeded to run off the next eight goals, including five less than halfway through the match.

At that point head coach Jennifer Pawlowski made a change in goal and brought in Haleigh Manning (Milton, Ga./Cambridge). The sophomore settled in to allow just three goals the rest of the half as Gannon trailed 8-3 at intermission thanks to goals scored by Jacobs and Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) in the final minutes. Hepditch's goal came just before the buzzer.

IUP went ahead 11-4 midway through the period, but the Golden Knights proceeded to score the next three goals and had closed the gap to 11-7. The three goals came in a lightning 68 seconds. Skylar Parsons accounted for the first goal with an assist to Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) at the 3:58 mark, and Jacobs scored for the third time at 3:05, assisted by Hepditch. Fifteen seconds later the ball was once again in the back of the net for a Gannon goal, with McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) scoring her eighth goal of the season, assisted by Stevens.

The two teams traded goals to end the third period with IUP leading 12-8. Neither team scored for over ten minutes in the fourth period before IUP's Kathryn Burke scored the first of her three goals in the final period at the 4:03 mark. Hepditch countered with a goal nine seconds later to make it 13-9, but IUP scored three times in the final three minutes to pull away.

IUP finished a with a 33-20 advantage in shots and finished with 19 draw controls compared to nine for the Golden Knights. IUP was successful on 10-of-12 clears, Gannon 8-of-16.

Jacobs paced Gannon with three goals after scoring twice in the first four games. Stevens had two goals and two assists while Hepditch scored twice with an assist.

Gannon returns to McConnell Family Stadium on Saturday, March 18 for a second straight PSAC West home match. The Golden Knights host Lock Haven at 1:00 p.m.
