Gannon Concludes Play in NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Gannon softball team wrapped up action in the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic with a 5-0 loss to Wingate on Sunday morning. The Golden Knights now head to Clermont, Florida to continue their spring trip with seven games in five days.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-4 on Sunday while Wingate out of North Carolina improved to 16-5. They continue to look for their bats to come alive while the pitching has been solid. Against Wingate Gannon had a pair of hits – singles by Olivia Evans (Horseheads, New York/Horseheads Senior High) in the third and Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) in the fourth.

They came closest to plating a run in the top of the fourth with Ryan eventually reaching third following her single. Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) walked with two outs but they would leave runners on second and third.

After freshman Josie Spano (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) matched zeroes with Jillian Thomas for four innings Wingate broke through with a run in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Ragan Liles with two outs.

The Bulldogs broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, all with two outs. The big blow was a bases-clearing double by Raelynn Kramer to plate three runs.

Spano allowed five hits and four earned runs while throwing all six innings. She walked three and struck out three.

Gannon returns to the diamond on Tuesday, February 28 with a pair of contests. The Golden Knights play Bridgeport at 9:00 a.m. followed by 2:00 p.m. game vs. Findlay.
