Perez, Helm Win Titles as Gannon Finishes Second at NCWWC Northeast Regional

Nine Golden Knights qualify for national championships

ERIE, Pa. – Thanks to a strong showing in the NCWWC Northeast Regional on Saturday the Gannon University women's wrestling team will send nine wrestlers to the upcoming NCWWC National Championships. Nationals will take place on Friday, March 3 and Saturday, March 4 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
 
Gannon served as the host of the 2023 Northeast Regional and nearly came away with the championship. Sacred Heart's Jacklyn Smith won at 191 lbs. as the Pioneers edged the Golden Knights for first place, 176 points to 172.5 points. East Stroudsburg was third with 135.5 points and Elmira came in fourth with 106.5 points.
 
Sacred Heart and Lock Haven finished with three champions apiece, while Gannon and East Stroudsburg each crowned two champions. The Golden Knights had eight wrestlers reach the semifinals and three advanced to the finals. The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualified for National.
 
Freshman Chloe Kitagawa (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) (13-4) lost by fall in 57 seconds to seventh-ranked Aaliyah Payne-Parris of Sacred Heart at 101 lbs. but still earned his trip to Nationals thanks to her second-place finish.
 
Lana Perez (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) will make her third trip to Nationals after capturing the title at 136 lbs. thanks to a fall over Maddison Matta at 2:03. The sophomore improved to 14-6 with four wins, two by fall and a technical fall plus a win by injury default. It's her second regional title after winning at 130 lbs. in 2021 and going on to earn All-American honors with an eighth-place finish.
 
Gannon ended up with two of the top three finishers at 170 lbs. as No. 7 Annebelle Helm and No. 6 Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) finished first and third, respectively. The two met in the semifinals, with Helm edging Gonzalez 2-1. In the final, the junior used a takedown late in the match to defeat Cara Broadus of Sacred Heart. Helm is now a three-time national qualifier and was an All-American in 2020 with a fifth-place finish at 155 lbs. She is now 18-9 on the season and 76-29 for her career.
 
Gonzalez (19-8), meanwhile, picked up her first trip to the national championships as the junior won two more matches to take home third place and earn a first-ever trip to Nationals.
 
In addition to Gonzalez, four other Golden Knights earned spots to Nationals with third-place showings. Fifth-ranked Julianne Moccia (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) (18-7), an All-American year ago with a seventh-place finish at 109 lbs., finished third at the same weight, with two falls and a technical fall.  
 
Brielle Larsen (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional), a junior who joined the Golden Knights in January after transferring from King University, took third at 116 lbs. while improving to 10-7 and will head to Nationals for the first time.
 
Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) joins Kitagawa as a freshman qualifying for Nationals. Competing at 143 lbs., she went 4-1 to finish third and improve to 24-10 on the year. Stephanie Floor (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Leone) (10-9), meanwhile, wraps up her career with a fourth trip to Nationals. She moved up to 155 lbs. and came in third. The graduate student lost her first match but then came back with three straight wins, two by fall and one by technical fall. 
 
Juliana Cubias (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) (5-6) rounds out Gannon's national qualifiers with a fourth-place showing at 130 lbs.
