Clancy Conjures Up Old Shooting Touch but Slippery Rock Rallies Late to Defeat Golden Knights

ERIE, Pa. Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) has battled injuries the last two years, missing 28 games. On Wednesday night it was the Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) who put fear into opposing teams with his long-range shooting acumen who nearly led Gannon to an upset over Slippery Rock. Unfortunately the Golden Knights hit a dry spell late in the game and SRU rallied for a 72-68 win at the Highmark Events Center.

Clancy scored a game-high 20 points, his highest total since a 21-point outing against Indiana (Pa.) on March 4, 2021. The redshirt sophomore made 5-of-8 3-pointers and was 7-of-10 overall from the field. He added five rebounds and three assists.

Gannon is now 2-17 and 2-13 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock improved to 14-7 and 8-7 in league play.

The back-and-forth game saw Slippery Rock jump out to a 12-point lead at 24-12 with 8:52 remaining in the first half. The Golden Knights closed the gap to 34-28 at the half and neither team could gain a significant advantage in the second half.

The final 20 minutes featured eight lead changes and three ties. Slippery Rock would forge an eight-point lead at 48-40 five minutes into the second half. Gannon ran off the next nine points to take its first lead since the opening basket. Clancy scored the first five points on a long 2-point bucket and an NBA-range 3-pointer. Cenker Evran (Adana, Turkey/Turk Telekom) scored his lone basket of the game and Thomas Whitley's (Laurel, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) jumper in the lane gave Gannon a 49-48 lead with 13:11 remaining.

From that point on neither team led by more than four points. Gannon ran off five straight points to take a 60-56 lead with just under seven minutes to play and led by a point at 66-65 with 4:30 remaining on Zach Kent's (Magnolia, Del./Blair Academy (N.J.)) jumper.

The Golden Knights would not score again for over four minutes as SRU scored five points in a row for a 70-66 advantage with 1:38 left. Berkay Yilmaz' (Istanbul, Turkey/Fenerbahce Beko) layup with 24 seconds left broke the dry spell and pulled the Knights to within two at 70-38.

Lashon Lindsey made one-of-two free throws two seconds later giving Gannon a chance to come down and tie the game. Clancy's contested three was off the mark and Jomo Goings added two more free throws for the final margin.

Clancy was one three Golden Knights in double figures. Kent heated up later to finish with 15 points, making 2-of-4 3-pointers, while pulling down six rebounds. Demetrius Mims (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) reached double digits for the 12th straight game with 12 points, adding seven rebounds and five assists.

Freshman Josh Omojafo (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean de Brebeuf) added eight points and six rebounds, while redshirt freshman led Gannon with nine boards and scored seven points.

SRU also had three players in double figures. Lindsey had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Amante Britt also had 15 markers. Goings had 14 points.

Gannon ended the game shooting 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the floor, making 8-of-16 3-pointers. Slippery Rock enjoyed a hot second-half at 56.5 percent (13-of-23) to end the night at 45.6 percent (26-of-57). The Rock made 6-of-19 3-pointers. Gannon was 6-of-11 at the free throw line and SRU 14-of-22.

The rebound battle finished at 37 boards apiece, with Gannon committing 12 turnovers and SRU 10. However, The Rock held a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint.

Gannon returns to action on Saturday, February 4 at top-ranked Indiana (Pa.) before a quick turnaround, playing two days later with a home game vs. Pitt-Johnstown on Monday, February 6.
