Mims Flirts with Triple-Double in Loss to Top-Ranked IUP

INDIANA, Pa. Demetrius Mims (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) continued his hot play with his 13th straight game in double figures but the Gannon men's basketball team was unable to overcome big run by top-ranked Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon. Ranked number one by the NABC and second in the D2SIDA Top 25, IUP remained undefeated with a 74-58 win over Gannon. The Golden Knights are now 2-18 and 2-14 in the PSAC West while IUP is now 22-0 and 16-0 in the division.

Mims flirted with a triple double with 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. The 6'6" redshirt junior made 7-of-10 field goals and the seven assists were a career-high, he fell one rebound shy of his third double-double of the season.

Mims was one of three Golden Knights in double digits. Freshman Josh Omojafo (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean de Brebeuf) added 14 points including three emphatic dunks, and Chris Clancy (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's) made 4-of-12 3-pointers to finish with 12 points. Omojafo made 6-of-9 field goal attempts while Clancy had seven rebounds.

IUP also had three players in double figures. Shawndale Jones, the leading scorer in the PSAC, scored a game-high 25 points, including a 9-of-11 showing at the line. Dave Morris added 17 points and eight rebounds while making 5-of-12 3-pointers, and Tomiwa Sulaiman had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Gannon shot 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the floor, making 6-of-20 3-pointers, and went 8-for-15 at the line. IUP was held to 39.0 percent (23-of-59), making 8-of-29 3-pointers, but made 20-of-28 from the charity stripe. IUP held a 40-33 advantage on the glass with 11 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second-chance points. Gannon failed to score on a second chance. Gannon committed 19 turnovers and IUP 11.

The Golden Knights led for a good portion of the first half, and held a 23-21 lead when Cenker Evran (Adana, Turkey/Turk Telekom) scored on a layup with 6:21 left. The Crimson Hawks took control with the next 11 points as Gannon went almost five minutes without a point before Omojafo made one-of-two free throws. IUP would hold a 36-24 lead at the half outscoring GU 15-1 to end the half.

IUP didn't give Gannon a chance to rally in the second half taking a 51-30 lead with 13:36 remaining as their run since Gannon's last lead reached 30-7. The Golden Knights pulled no closer than the final score thanks to a 7-0 run to conclude the game.

Things don't get any easier for the Golden Knights as they play the second of three games in five days. They host a Pitt-Johnstown team that is 16-5 on Monday, February 6 with tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
