Helm, Chavez Power Golden Knights to 25-19 Win Over D'Youville

Head coach Erin Vandiver wins first career dual match

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's wrestling program handed first-year head coach Erin Vandiver her initial dual victory on Sunday afternoon. The 13th-ranked Golden Knights (1-3) rallied to defeat D'Youville 25-19 at the Highmark Events Center.

D'Youville (1-4) is in its first year of competition and the Saints came in short-handed. They would forfeit the first four weight classes, although Gannon also did not weigh anyone in at 101 lbs. Gannon held a 15-0 lead when the wrestling actually began, but the Saints pulled ahead at 19-16 thanks to three falls and a technical fall.

That's when a wrestler making her final appearance at home for the Golden Knights and one making her first gave Gannon the come-from-behind victory. Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) took the mat at 170 lbs. A two-time All-American, Helm will receive her master's degree next weekend and is then headed to Colorado where a job awaits her.

In her final home appearance she took a 6-0 lead against Eliza Stricklin after one period thanks to three takedowns. She added a takedown and a two-point exposure to win by technical fall 10-0 at 4:45. Ranked eighth at 170 lbs., she improved to 17-7 while giving Gannon a slim 20-19 lead.

That left freshman Christina Chavez (Chandler, Ariz./Arizona College Preparatory) to take the mat at 191 lbs. with the match on the line. D'Youville's Riley Wentlent went up 1-0 on a pushout but Chavez took Wentlent to the mat not long after and completed the winning pin at 1:44, giving Gannon a 25-19 victory. Chavez improved to 4-7.

Gannon returns to action on Sunday, December 10 competing in the North Central Open in Naperville, Illinois.
