Match Preview: Golden Knights Host D'Youville in Home Debut for Erin Vandiver

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's wrestling team will make its home debut under first-year head coach Erin Vandiver on Sunday, January 3 hosting D'Youville. The match will get underway at the Highmark Events Center at 12:15 p.m.

The meet originally included John Carroll, but JCU suffered a number of injuries and was forced to pull out earlier in the week. That leaves Gannon opposing D'Youville for the first time.

The Golden Knights come in with a 0-3 record and were ranked 13th in the most recent The Open Mat dual national rankings. All three duals were in the Adrian Duals. The dual season opened with a 42-1 loss to North Central, the top ranked women's wrestling team in the country, followed by a 30-126 loss to Indiana Tech and 23-21 setback to No. 12 Aurora.

In addition, the Golden Knights finished fifth out of 22 teams in the season-opening ESU Open and came in sixth out of 23 teams in the Adrian Invitational. The Golden Knights last competed in the Missouri Valley open on November 17.

The Gannon lineup features four nationally-ranked wrestlers. Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) and Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) are the highest ranked, both sitting fourth in their respective weight classes. Ujfalvi will take the mat at 143 lbs. and has an 11-5 record. She took home first place at the ESU Open and was fifth at the Adrian Invitational The sophomore from Hungary earned All-American honors as a freshman last year, finishing fifth at 143 lbs. She led Gannon in wins with a 28-12 record.  

Gonzalez is part of a trio of outstanding Gannon wrestlers at 170 lbs. The senior owns a 7-4 record. She was also an All-American last year thanks to a seventh-place showing at Nationals. She earlier picked up a fourth-place finish at the ESU Open and was fifth at the Missouri Valley Open.  

Annebelle Helm is also a returning All-American at that weight class after finishing eighth last year. She previously earned All-American accolades in 2019-20 with a fifth-place finish at 155 lbs. Helm comes in with a 16-7 record and is ranked eighth. She has placed in all three open tournaments.

Gannon's fourth nationally-ranked wrestler is Kat Pendergrass (Bracey, Va./South Granville (N.C.)). The senior is ranked 13th at 116 lbs. with a 10-9 record. She sat out the 2022-23 season but is a two-time All-American, once at Gannon and once at Ferrum. The senior finished eighth for the Golden Knights at 101 lbs. in 2021-22. She has placed at the Adrian Invitational and Missouri Valley Open.
