No. 18/17 Golden Knights Run Away for Ninth Straight Win, 121-76 over Kutztown

Gannon sets record for 100-point games in a season

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's basketball team broke the season record for games with 100 points while remaining perfect at 9-0, including 3-0 in the PSAC, with a 121-76 win over a depleted Kutztown squad on Monday night. The Golden Knights came in ranked 18th in the NABC Division II Top 25 and 17th in the D2CSC poll. Kutztown lost its eighth straight game and is now 1-8 as Gannon snapped a five-game losing streak to the Golden Bears.

The 9-0 start is the best ever by a first-year coach at Gannon
, as Jordan Fee eclipsed the previous record of eight straight wins by Ed Sparling in 1974-75. The nine wins in a row represent the best getaway for a Gannon team since the 2008-09 team won nine in a row. After that comes 14 straight wins by the 2001-02 edition.

While the last two meetings wit Kutztown went into overtime the final outcome was never in doubt on Monday. Gannon never trailed after scoring the first six points of the game and the lead grew to double digits just over five minutes into the game when Nigel Haughton (Bel Air, Md./South Kent) hit a 3-pointer to give Gannon a 16-5 lead.

Gannon went on another one of its patented runs outscoring the Golden Bears 20-2 over a period of just four minutes. That included 12 straight points to cap the run as the lead was 38-10 with just under ten minutes.

The Golden Knights led 67-21 at the half as they shot 57.9 percent from the floor and were a perfect 19-of-19 at the line. Kutztown
committed 19 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes as Gannon held a 29-4 advantage in points off turnovers. The 67 points were the seventh time in 17 halves that Gannon scored 60-or-more points.

With the outcome no longer in doubt, the big question in the second half is when the record would fall for 100-point games in a season. That officially occurred at the 8:32 mark when Ernest Shelton (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) followed his own miss for a layup and a 101-50 lead. It was Gannon's seventh of the year, breaking the previous record of six set in 1968-69.

By that time Fee had turned entirely to his bench as he emptied the bench with 13 minutes remaining and a key matchup
with West Chester on tap on Tuesday. All 14 players on the roster scored at least three points with a season-low of three scoring in double figures.

Josh Omojafo (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean de Brebeuf) led the balanced attack with 20 points, his fifth game of 20-or-more points this season. The sophomore guard made 6-of-7 field goals and was 8-of-8 at the line while playing just 16 minutes. Shelton had 14 points in 14 minutes while Derrick Anderson (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) finished with 11 points in 15 minutes. Three players had nine more points and three more contributed eight. That included Nigel Haughton (Bel Air, Md./South Kent), the transfer from Chestnut Hill who contributed eight points and seven rebounds.

Gannon shot 54.3 percent from the floor (38-of-70), the sixth time shooting better than 50 percent from the floor. That included a 7-of-18 chart on 3-pointers plus a 38-of-46 showing at the line. The 38 free throws made tied the school record previously set against Hillsdale
in 2007-08. Kutztown finished at 46.6 percent from the floor (27-of-58), including 5-of-14 on 3-pointers, while making 17-of-25 free throws.

Gannon held a 42-32 advantage on the glass and forced 30 turnovers while committing just 14. It's the third time the Golden Knights forced 30-or-more turnovers. It led to a 47-14 advantage in points off turnovers.

Fee's high-octane attack entered the game leading Division II in scoring offense at just under 116 ppg. and scored more than 120 points for the fourth time this year.

The Golden Knights will look for one last big scoring effort before the holidays while playing for the final time in the Highmark
Events Center before the facility is shut down for extended renovations. Plenty of festivities are planned on Tuesday night as a West Chester team that won its fifth straight game on Monday with a win at Mercyhurst visits the Highmark Events Center. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
