NAPERVILLE, Ill. – The Gannon women's wrestling team was without one All-American at the 170 pounds going into the North Central College Open on Sunday.
However, the Golden Knights showed they're still loaded in that weight class.
Schyler Caringi (Earlton, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) led Gannon with a third-place finish at 170 pounds, and
Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) placed sixth in the same weight class at the highly competitive tournament.
Gannon was without All-American
Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) for the first time as she spent Sunday afternoon at her graduation at the Highmark Events Center.
Several hundred miles away on Sunday, coach
Erin Vandiver's team was busy placing eighth among 30 teams at the North Central College Open. Gannon finished with 60 points, while host North Central won the tourney with 177.

Caringi's big day
Â
Although Helm will be missed, Caringi and Gonzalez showed that Gannon has plenty of talent at 170 pounds.
Caringi, a sophomore, finished the day with a 5-1 record on her way to the third-place finish. Four of those wins came via pin.
She opened the day with back-to-back pins over Aurora's Nydia Martinez and Davenport's Libia Hernandez in a combined 45 seconds. After a 6-1 loss to Jade Herzer of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the quarterfinals, Caringi ran off three consolation wins.
That included a fall over Fiona McConnell of North Central in 58 seconds and a 59-second pin of Emma Thomas of Lindenwood in the third-place match. In between, Caringi won by injury default over Gonzalez. Caringi is now 13-5 after missing the 2022-23 season with an injury.

Â
Gonzalez starts quickly
Â
After receiving a first-round bye, No. 5-ranked Gonzalez won by a pin over Emma Stevenson (Cornell in 58 seconds and then by a pin over Gabrielle Phillips of Schreiner in 1:48 in the quarterfinals. Gonzalez then lost to Grace Doering of Indiana Tech 5-1 in the semifinals before taking back-to-back injury defaults on the way to finishing sixth.

Ujfalvi places 4th
Â
Gannon's
Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) was Gannon's third medalist. Ujfalvi, ranked No. 6 nationally at 143 pounds, went 4-2 in the tourney. She opened with consecutive technical falls against Anna Strand of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (11-0) and Samantha Segura-Veliz of Midland (10-0).
After an 8-4 loss in the semifinals, Ujfalvi regrouped to record a 41-second fall against Tabitha Wood of Hastings and a 12-6 decision over North Central's Riley Aamold.
Ujfalvi then dropped a 12-2 tech fall to Emma Walker of Campbellsville in the third-place match.
