MARSHALL, Mo. – Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) and Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) are Gannon wrestlers who are accustomed to wrestling in big tournaments, and they're also used to meeting each other in those competitions.

That's what happens when you're in the same weight class and among the top wrestlers in the nation.

On Saturday, the two 170-pound All-Americans faced each other in fifth-place match of the prestigious Missouri Valley Open, where many of the top women wrestlers in country gathered for a two-day tournament.

Gonzalez emerged with the win and fifth place, and Helm settled for sixth place, but both GU wrestlers had outstanding performances in the tournament. Gonzalez, who sat out last week, had two wins Friday and three wins on Saturday as she finished with a 5-2 record.

She entered the tourney ranked No. 6 nationally by the NWCA, and she closed her tournament with an 11-0 technical fall over her teammate in the medal match. The two had faced each other in the NCWWC National Championships last season as well as in the regionals.

Helm might have made a case for being nationally ranked by going 7-3 in the tournament, including six consecutive wins in the consolation rounds – three on Friday and three on Saturday.

Kat Pendergrass (Bracey, Va./South Granville (N.C.)) was the third Golden Knight to medal in the tourney. She placed eighth at 116 pounds after going 4-3, which included three straight wins in the consolation rounds.

Juliana Cubias (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) went 2-2 at 116 pounds but she bowed out of the tournament with a loss on Saturday morning.

Schyler Caringi (Earlton, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) also had a strong tournament at 170 pounds, winning three times, but she ran into Gonzalez in the consolations and was eliminated.
