MARSHALL, Mo. – Five Gannon wrestlers were still alive in the consolation rounds on Friday night as the Golden Knights competed in the massive and highly competitive Missouri Valley Open.

Five of the top seven ranked teams in the nation competed along with many top unattached wrestlers as some weight divisions featured more than 50 wrestlers. Gannon head coach Erin Vandiver took 12 wrestlers to the meet, and five of them were still alive deep into the consolation rounds on Friday evening.

Gannon was particularly good at 170 pounds, where three GU wrestlers competed, and all three – Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union), and Schyler Caringi (Earlton, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) – had advanced to at least the fifth round of consolations.

Gonzalez, who sat out the previous weekend in Adrian, Mich., was the lone Gannon wrestler to reach the quarterfinals after getting a bye and winning her first two matches. Her loss came on criteria after a 3-3 tie.

Helm went 4-1 on Friday. After winning her first-round match and losing in the second match, she reeled off three consecutive wins in the consolations. Her only loss came against Iowa's Kylie Welker, the No. 1 wrestler in the nation at 170 pounds.

Also at 170, Caringi went 2-1 and was one win from facing Gonzalez in the consolations.

The other two Gannon wrestlers who successfully made it through the fourth round of consolations were Kat Pendergrass (Bracey, Va./South Granville (N.C.)) and Juliana Cubias (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) at 116 pounds. Both wrestlers went 2-1 on Friday after an opening-round bye.

Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) (123) and Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) (143) each had two wins before being eliminated.
