Seven Score in Doubles Figures as Gannon Once Again Sets Game Record for Points

Golden Knights top Penn State DuBois 146-70

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's basketball team improved to 3-0 under first-year head coach Jordan Fee thanks to a 146-70 win over Penn State DuBois on Wednesday night. The game marked the debut at the Highmark Events Center for Fee, who has already guided the Golden Knights to as many wins as they had all last year. Penn State DuBois dropped to 1-3 with the loss.

Fee's fast-paced, full-court pressing style was in full evidence as Gannon broke the school record for points in a game for the second time in three games. The Golden Knights opened the season with a 140-108 win over Glenville State to eclipse the previous record of 130 points. That lasted for one game before it was broken again.

As expected, the final numbers are quite impressive. All fourteen players scored at least five points, with seven players in double figures. The Golden Knights shot a season-high 62.6 percent from the floor. After tying the school record with 93 attempts against Glenville State they took 91 shots vs. the Nittany Lions and set a new school record for field goals made with 57. That included 10-of-27 3-pointers along with going 22-of-27 from the line.

Penn State DuBois also enjoyed a strong night from the floor but Gannon took 41 more shots, asd the Nittany Lions made 26-of-50 field goals (52.0 pct.), making 4-of-15 3-pointers, and made good on 14-of-24 free throws.

Gannon outrebounded PSU DuBois by a wide 48-18 margin with 22 offensive boards. It led to a 55-12 advantage in second-chance points. Gannon also outscored the Nittany Lions 54-6 on turnovers as the Golden Knights committed just nine turnovers while forcing 32.

Zachary Hobbs (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert) rode a 4-for-6 effort on 3-pointers to finish with a team-high 18 points. The transfer from Indiana State was 7-of-10 from the floor overall. Three players added 16 points. Josh Omojafo (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean de Brebeuf), who was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week after scoring 59 points in the first two games, had 16 points, as did Lyle Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Philadelphia Montgomery Christian Academy) and Nathan Schneider (Kersey, Pa./St. Marys Area). Tipton made 6-of-9 field goals, including a pair of three's, adding three steals. Schneider was also 6-of-9 with two three's and had five assists.

Michael Lucarotti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) chipped in with 14 points going 7-of-8 from the floor, including one monstrous slam dunk. Freshman Mason Bennett (Canton, Ga./Cherokee) came off the bench to contribute 12 points and five rebounds in 11 minutes. Derrick Anderson (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points. Backcourt players Derrick James (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) and Nigel Haughton (Bel Air, Md./South Kent) had 10 assists and eight rebounds, respectively.

Gannon jumped out to a 12-0 lead and Penn State DuBois never got the deficit under double figures after that. The lead grew to as much as 39 points late in the half before the Golden Knights closed the first 20 minutes with a 73-35 lead. The 73 points were more than Gannon scored in 20 of 26 games last year. Oddly enough, the second half also finished with Gannon holding a 73-35 advantage.

The school record for points fell with 2:47 left in the game on a layup by Berkay Yilmaz (Istanbul, Turkey/Fenerbahce Beko).

The Golden Knights are now off until November 24-25 when they host the Gary Miller Classic. Gannon plays Georgian Court in the opener at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, with Davenport and Lincoln (Pa.) playing in the 7:30 p.m. nightcap. Saturday's consolation game tips off at 5:30 p.m. with the championship game to follow at 7:30 p.m.
