INDIANA, Pa. – The Gannon women's soccer team scored twice in the final 18 minutes as it rallied to defeat Indiana (Pa.) 3-2 on Wednesday in a PSAC West game at South Campus Field.
The win was the fifth in a row for the Golden Knights, who improved to 7-2-1 overall and remained solidly in second place in the Western Division with a 7-1-0 mark. Gannon (21 points) trails only first-place Mercyhurst (24) in the PSAC West standings and is seven points ahead of third-place Slippery Rock. Fourth-place IUP dropped to 3-4-2 and 3-4-1.
Sophomore midfielder
Ella Fadale (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) tied the score at 2 with 17:02 remaining, and freshman midfielder
Grace Emanuel (Erie, Pa./McDowell) struck for the decisive goal less than two minutes later.
Coach
Colin Petersen's team started quickly, taking the lead just 5:23 into the game when graduate student
Leah Bermudez (Milton, Ontario/Jean Vanier Catholic) headed in a corner kick from junior
Gabby Boden (Butler, Pa./Butler). It was the second goal of the season for Bermudez and the fourth assist for Boden.
However, IUP soon tied the game and took the lead. Julia Csernyik made it 1-1 with a goal at the 14-minute mark. Hannah Scardina then gave IUP a 2-1 lead with a goal at the 21:41 mark.
The Crimson Hawks took that one-goal advantage into halftime and protected the lead for most of the second half.
However, Fadale then scored the equalizer. Freshman forward
Brooklyn Respecki (McKean, Pa./General McLane) sent a centering pass in from the left side, and Fadale used her left foot to boot the ball into the right side of the net.
It was Fadale's fourth goal of the season, while Respecki picked up her team-leading fifth assist. Respecki, who has a team-high seven goals, now has at least one point in nine of her first 10 college games.
With 15:09 left, Emanuel then scored the go-ahead goal – her fifth of the season – on a tremendous effort. She took a pass from Bermudez just to the left of the goal and used her left foot to hit a rocket from a tough angle past the IUP goalie, into the far side of the goal.
Gannon outshot IUP 21-10, including 8-4 in shots on goal.
The Golden Knights will now turn their attention to Saturday when they will host Pitt-Johnstown at 5 p.m. as part of Soctober weekend at McConnell Family Stadium.
