Golden Knights Overcome Weather, UPJ to Post Sixth Straight Win

Golden Knights defeat Mountain Cats 3-0

ERIE, Pa. – Weather can be the great equalizer in soccer. It almost was on Saturday as Gannon hosted Pitt-Johnstown in search of a sixth straight win. The Golden Knights scored three times in the final 17 minutes to hand the Mountain Cats a 3-0 defeat.

Gannon improved to 8-2-1 overall and 8-1-0 in the PSAC West with its sixth consecutive victory. The Golden Knights pulled even atop the division standings with 24 points but the Lakers were playing at Clarion later in the evening. UPJ dropped to 1-7-3 and 1-6-2, respectively.

High winds buffeted McConnell Family Stadium and heavy rain poured down in the first half. Gannon had the advantage of the wind in the first half and despite a 16-2 edge in shots the match was scoreless at halftime.

While the heavy rains subsided in the second half and sun even shone through at times, Gannon was now working into the wind. They finally solved the answer in the 74th minute thanks to the freshman combination of Brooklyn Respecki (McKean, Pa./General McLane) and Grace Emanuel (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Respecki gathered in Emanuel's pass and fired a shot past UPJ goalkeeper Megan Giesey for a 1-0 lead at 73:30. It was Respecki's team-leading eighth goal of the season. She has scored a point in 10 of 11 matches.

That goal opened the goal, so to speak. The Golden Knights scored a total of three goals in just over five minutes. Jamie Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) followed with her first goal of the season just 23 seconds later off a crossing pass from Maddy Endler (Salem, Ore./West Salem) at 73:53.

The third goal came at 78:47 courtesy of Emanuel, an unassisted goal. It was her sixth of the season.

Morgan Sinan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) registered two saves in goal for her second shutout of the season. Gannon finished with a 28-3 advantage in shots, including 12-2 on goal.

Gannon will play the second of back-to-back home games on Wednesday, October 11 hosting Edinboro. The match gets underway at 3:00 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium. Gannon posted a 3-1 win at Edinboro in the first meeting between the two schools.
