Katsande's Four Goals Power No. 13 Gannon to 5-2 Win over Lock Haven

ERIE, Pa.Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College) scored a career-high four goals to lead No. 13 Gannon to a 5-2 win over Lock Haven at McConnell Family Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Knights remained undefeated at 9-0-1 while PSAC East foe Lock Haven dropped to 2-5-3.

The 9-0-1 start is the best for the Golden Knights since the 1993 squad opened the season with 14 straight wins. In addition, Gannon has now scored five goals in three straight matches for the first time since doing so a year ago. The Golden Knights previously defeated Mercyhurst 5-1 and California (Pa.) 5-0.

Katsande, a graduate student from England, matched his season total of four goals and has begun to inch up the career records. He now has 29 career goals, which is tied for 16th, and his 72 career points stand 18th.

As has been the case for the Golden Knights this year, they found the back of the net early in the match courtesy of Katsande. He took a long pass from Bautista Corti (Manuel Alberti, Argentina/Adultos 2000), and the Lock Haven goalkeeper got a piece of the ball but not enough to prevent it from finding the back of the net. Just 2:17 had elapsed and Gannon held a 1-0 lead.

Lock Haven knotted the score at 1-1 at 16:06 off a long throw in, but Gannon grabbed the lead for good in the 34th minute at 2-1. Lennox Crews' (Offenbach, Germany/Leibnizschule) corner kick went to Rafa Hyde (São José dos Campos, Brazil), who headed the ball in from the right wing into the left corner of the net. It was the freshman's fourth goal of the season.

The score remained 2-1 at the half despite the Bald Eagles holding a 6-4 advantage in shots. Gannon was able to wear down Lock Haven in the second half and keep the pressure on. Katsande scored his second goal of the match at 57:00 on a penalty kick into the far left corner for a 3-1 advantage.

Lock Haven took advantage of a turnover in the Gannon end to cut the deficit to 3-2 at 60:45. The Golden Knights answered less than two minutes later to rebuild its advantage to two goals at 4-2. It was Katsande once again off a pair of great passes. Toby Gower (Norwich, England/Long Stratton) came down the left wing and fired a pass to Crews, who one-touched it to Katsande in front of the net. Katsande did the rest to make it 4-2 at 62:11.

Katsande capped off his career day with his fourth goal at 73:18. A crossing pass was tipped by the LHU goalie and Katsande headed the ball into the net to make it 5-2.

Despite the final score the statistics were relatively even. Gannon finished with a 17-16 advantage in shots and 11-0 on shots on goal. Samuel Alarcon (Madrid, Spain/Colegio el Valle II) recorded seven saves in goal, one shy of his career-high total in the Mercyhurst match.

Gannon returns to action on Saturday, October 7 hosting Seton Hill in a PSAC West match. It's Soctober Alumni Weekend for the Golden Knights with the action getting underway at 7:30 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium.
