Kotskar Continues Scoring Spree in Loss to Salem

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's water polo team concluded play in the WWPA Erie Classic on Sunday morning with a 20-13 loss to Salem at Cathedral Prep's Hallman Aquatics Center. The Golden Knights head into next weekend's WWPA Morgantown Classic with a 7-8 record.

Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) continued his scoring spree as the sophomore contributed six goals and two assists. Marty Kaverman Jr. (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added three goals and two assists and Dylan Schmitzerle (Bradenton, Fla./Huron) contributed two goals and two assists.

Gannon settled in after a hot start by Salem to limit the Tigers to five goals in the second half. However, the high-scoring Salem team jumped out to a 15-7 lead at the half while improving to 15-3.

Salem scored twice before a minute had been played in the match. First-year head coach Zarko Sadikovic called a quick timeout and his Golden Knights responded with a pair of goals by Kotskar to knot the score at 2-2. Salem would end the first period with a 7-4 lead.

Schmitzerle opened the second period with a goal to pull Gannon within 7-5, but Salem would score eight of the next ten goals in the period for a 15-7 lead at the half.
Gannon pulled to within 17-11 late in the third period thanks to three straight goals, the last two by Kotskar. The Tigers finished the period with back-to-back goals to make it 19-11 after three periods. A low-scoring fourth period saw Gannon's defense limit Salem to one goal, that coming in the final minute. Gannon scored twice.

The four teams in this week's WWPA Erie Classic now head to Morgantown, W.Va. to play each other once again next weekend. Gannon faces McKendree on Saturday, November 4 at 1:00 p.m., followed by a match with Mercyhurst at 6:00 p.m. The next morning Gannon plays Salem once again.
