ERIE, Pa. – Gannon Athletics has named women's cross country student-athlete
Alexis Abbett (Aspinwall, Pa./Aquinas Academy) and men's water polo student-athlete
Nick Thompson (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) as its Student-Athletes of the Week following strong performances over the weekend.
Abbett led the Golden Knights at the Doug Watts Open on Saturday, finishing sixth overall in a field of 74 runners. She crossed the finish line in 19:49.00 as Gannon's top finisher and helped the Golden Knights place third in the team standings with 98 points.
The performance marked a strong start to the 2026 season for Abbett and the Golden Knights, as she earned a top-10 finish in the season-opening meet.
Thompson helped lead the Gannon men's water polo team to a pair of victories on Saturday, scoring a team-high six goals across two contests. He converted six of his nine shot attempts on the day.
Thompson opened the day with four goals on six shots in Gannon's 22-9 victory over Wheaton (Mass.). He followed with two goals in a thrilling 16-15 victory over Connecticut College, with both coming in the fourth quarter.
Thompson converted a penalty shot with 2:08 remaining before scoring again with just 25 seconds left.
