LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Gannon University women's wrestling team went 2-1 and stayed alive in the consolation bracket Friday during the opening day of the NWCA National Duals at the Kentucky Expo Center.
Gannon defeated Wisconsin Stevens Point 30-15 in its tournament opener. However, the Golden Knights met  No. 1-ranked King University (Tenn.) in the second round and dropped the dual by a 34-12 score. Head coach
Breonnah Neal's team bounced back for a dominant 38-9 victory over Emmanuel College (Ga.) in the second round of consolations.
Gannon (5-2) will face No. 5-ranked Augsburg University (Minn.) on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the consolation semifinals. They Knights can finish as high as fifth place.
No. 4-ranked
Julianne Moccia (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) starred at 109 pounds for the Golden Knights. She went 3-0 with three bonus-point victories as she improved to 13-5 on the season. Moccia recorded a 16-4 technical fall against Wisconsin Steve Point's Alexis Winecke before pinning King's Sage Mortimer (5:23) and Emmanuel's Dinayah Vazquez (1:03).
Chloe Kitagawa (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) (101 pounds),
Lana Perez (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) (136),
Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) (143),
Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) (171), and
Kendall McGarity (New Braunfels, Texas/Smithson Valley) (191) each registered two victories for Gannon.
Kitagawa, a freshman, improved to 5-2 with a 40-second pin against WSP and a 10-4 decision against Emmanuel.
Perez, ranked No. 8 at 136 pounds, won a 12-0 tech fall in the opener and registered a pin in 1:09 against Emmanuel. She is now 9-5.
Ujfalvi, another freshman, moved 12-8 by getting a pin vs. Wisconsin Stevens Point and a decision vs. Emmanuel.
Gonzalez, ranked No. 6 at 170 pounds, improved to 10-5 by going 2-1 Friday. She had a pin against WSP before winning by technical fall against Emmanuel.
Kendall McGarity (New Braunfels, Texas/Smithson Valley) moved her record to 8-4 with an 18-second fall against Wisconsin Stevens Point and a forfeit win vs. King.
